I'm from the UK but have a home in Davenport Fl. Fish only from the bank and I have had great fun catching bass, bluegills and bullheads. Never caught a crappie and it seems to be a boat only game. Is that correct?

No it is not a boat only thing. A lot of crappies can be caught from shore. but it is a different kind of fishing. We just seem to like using our boats .
Anywhere a dock over-hangs the water is a good place to start.

docks, piers, lily pads any kind of cover that you can toss a line and bobber to can be productive.
My thoughts; it’s a different hunt for them. Deeper water and shade are what they look for. Their eyes are sensitive to bright light and do what they can to stay away from it as much as possible. Docks, overhangs, logs that are off the bottom, floating weeds blown up against something, and these are just some of their hides. Presentation also plays a part. After they feed and retreat to their hides, they aren’t as active as they would be at dawn or dusk. I like a smaller, slower presentation that they don’t have to expend much energy to achieve. A small boat would give you lots more area to explore and keep you away from the wildlife and bugs that hang out in the weeds too. Stay positive and keep asking questions, that’s what we’re here for. And welcome from DeBary.

A lot of guys bank fish the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes and do well at the canal mouths. That's not too far from you.
Try off a dock at night especially cold time of year. Slip bobber and minnow. Use the thill bobbers with light you can tune. On and off. There is a few different color lights. I’m from up north the technique works all over. I was in Florida November a few years back it worked good
