just got back from talquin everything was good except the fishing ! 2 days of trolling netted 13 keeper crappie . huge downturn from 8-10 years ago . talked to a local at the ramp friday morning , he said in the 42 years he's been fishing talquin this was the worst he had seen it . said if you had 6 keepers in am and 6 keepers in pm you had a good day ! any thoughts as to why the lake has gone down in recent years ?

i live on lake talquin. thoughts on changes in the fishing: fishing pressure from georgia, many people keeping limits, some TWICE in one day, crappie being absolutely pounded during spawning. tremendous increase in the number of cormorants and pelicans in the last 10 years but primarily human fishing pressure. when in lived in colorado i saw a new lake absolutely destroyed by people keeping their limit (trout) every day. we are destoying our own resource.
thanks for the comment catfish45 , I agree for the most part . we fished down there once or twice a year for 7 or 8 years about 10 years ago , great quality was the reason . we did keep a limit and ate them . crappie fishing was best I've seen . haven't been down in 7 0r 8 years so this trip was disappointing . I totally agree on the cormorant theory but have not seen any pelicans myself (maybe they are there during the winter months) . I also agree about the pressure , seemed to withstand it 10 years ago , but now it looks like its taken a toll . I talked to a local guy at the ramp that said hed been fishing there 42 years and this was by far the toughest hed seen it . said 6 keepers in am and 6 keepers in pm was considered a good day . on a side note , I wonder what the life span of a crappie is ? any fisheries biologists out there ? the size and creel limit is what , 10 inches and 20 per person ? anyway , good to talk about this topic .....
Talquin fish are typically 6.5" in a year and 8.5"-9" at year two. life spa of a crappie is typically 7 years. the pelicans are out and about a lot, usually in 1 or 2 big groups. i've seen them in the river below the dam even. they roam a lot. see them only occasionally. i believe there are about 25 or so, but they eat lots of fish.
