Known for good numbers, but not many big ones.
What a refreshing thought, A party line yet to spread the word. lol
Hey I remember them, late 40s early 50s our number was 378 R1 2.
The R1 2 meant our ring was 1 long and 2 short rings.
You could just pick up the phone and have a conversation with the operator about who you wanted to reach.
Anyway Lake Marian is a very nice lake with some deeper areas, and also has a resident flock of white pelicans.
Paradise fish camp is about all there is, but it is also nice and very well run, offering a place to stay over as well as live bait. Near the fish camp there is another public launch site with 2 ramps and good rest rooms. Lake maps are available at the fish camp. The lake is surrounded pretty much by cattle ranches, the only houses being the little village near the fish camp. I would be prepared to troll at least initially.
On the opposite side of 441 and slightly south of Canoe Creek rd, there is a small sandwich shop, and next to that is a road leading east to Kenansville lake, "not on the maps". It's 12 miles of pretty good dirt road thru ranches till you get there.
For sure there is nothing there you didn't bring with you except a place to launch. Years back the road ran all the way to Vero Beach. But apparently cattle rustling was a major issue, so the ranchers out there burnt down the bridges to Vero Beach. Which might also be the reason new phone lines never got out there. lol
