A bream. Looks like a bluegill/speck cross kinda sorta. Have caught a rare few on the river here.

I want to think it's also called a sand perch but I could be wrong.

huh, don't think I ever caught one - looks like a speck with a bluegill mouth.
The finest gift you can give to any fisherman is to put a good fish back, and who knows if the fish that you caught isn't someone else's gift to you?"

They are from swampy waters. Need a higher tannic acid content. Other names are Flie Perch, Flie bream, sand perch, coon bream or just flier. A few waters around here carry them and actually have larger ones than that record but few fish for them or know what they are. They are low light feeders and love tiny baits.

I have caught many and some that had to push 2 lbs in Miccosukkee and Iamonia.

A great fighter on light tackle. You can target them, they love crappie jigs.

You pole through the pads to each clear spot and pole jig with a white jig head with a grub that you have pinched off the curly tail. Let it hit bottom and jig it up and down. Early and late is best but I have caught them all day long jigging next to the tussocks and pads.

By far my favorite eating panfish.

This is a Flier. No bright coloring. Will be dark from swampy waters. May have a golden tint.

This is a stumpnocker. It will have a violet hew. Especially near the gill plate.
