Default first report and a question

Took the youngest(6) out last weekend....hard to find accesible freshwater except for lake Trafford so ended up hitting the retention ponds around his house. No crappie, but some nice bluegills.Of course he wanted to keep and eat them, but I assume those development ponds are full of pesticides and fertilizers.Juct canned corn under a float did the trick,no talapia, but several times had something hit the float as it landed...bass?I'll have to try a jr.zara spook.

That kid learned to throw a cast net in about 3 throws...took me 3 days

We also went to naples pier to watch them fish.A couple people had a 1 or 2 foot section of rope at the end of their line with what appeared to be about a dozen loops of red yarn on each side.About the diameter of a quarter.Once I saw what looked to be a small baitfish in it.

I think maybe they were trying to catch crabs??or maybe the baitfish became entangled in it....and,Idrinking was involved!

Sounds like some sort of sabiki rig maybe...those are used to catch bait and usually have a half dozen or a dozen hooks...but I've never seen one with red yarn. Or I suppose it could have been a chum block. Were they actively fishing with it or did it just stay down in the water? I'm sure a bunch of people will know what it was if there was a picture.

No hooks, seemed to be holding it steady on the bottom.Guess I'll suck it up and ask them next time.

I love those sabiki (sp?) rig things. I have as much fun catching bait with those as catching the real fish... . Never saw a yarn thing but I haven't seen much. Let us know if you find out.

I bet they were crabbing. If it was regular yarn, the crab sees the red and climbs up to look for food, which you can feel when holding the rope. Raise it slowly and slide the net under the crab before he realizes he's headed for the sauna. Kinda like using a chicken neck on a rope but not near as productive. If it was tiny I have no idea.

I was thinking also, maybe some type of crab entangling setup .......

that was my guess, for blue crab. Those sabaki rigs are fun, catching bait sometimes is more enjoyable than the actual fishing!!
