About 40 years ago, I was ice fishing 90 feet deep for burbot , when my pole bent over hard. I set the hook and could feel the fish tug as I hoisted the rod. Every time I lifted, it would come up a little, feeling VERY heavy. Another guy near me saw the bend in the pole and came over to watch. Eventually, I could see it down deep. It had the mottling of a ling, but the head looked about three feet wide. The other guy looked down the hole, and said it had to be over a hundred pounds. Finally, as it got nearer to the top, I could see that it was a sagebrush, hooked out on the end. Every time I lifted, the branch would stretch and as the body of the brush caught up, it feel like a fish pulling. Apparently there was a current down at the bottom, and the sagebrush just rolled into my line, looking just like a hit.
