On the same trip when I was younger. My grandfather caught a couple of frogs while pitching under a bush. Then further down the bank he pitches again and said jokingly " another frog". All of a sudden a big splash. He set the hook and out comes an owl. Not good. Had to cut the line. Neither of us was gonna mess with that.

Years later fishing with family. My sister caught a lizard on a cricket. She picked her line out of the water to get a drink came back and a lizard had made her cricket lunch.

My son and I were trying out a spot a couple of miles from the lake house in the kayak. From the satelite photos it looked promising. Ended up being a shallow cut. We saw a few gar and was keeping a close eye on a small alligator. We paddled over to one side so I could cast and we ended up brushing into some water lillies or hyacinth (sp?) when there was a big splash and something flew out of the water. Hit me square in the chest! Of course after watching that alligator we were both a little spooked and got quite loud, my son (was in the front of the kayak) couldn't see what was going on behind him was having a fit (so was I and I could see). It was a 12" garfish that we spooked in the lillies that decided to join us. After wards it was funny, but definitely not until we figured it wasn't the gator!

I went on a canoe trip once down the Buffalo River in Arkansas one time and found a bunch of stuff on the bottom of the creek in about 4' of water. I could just see some blue jeans sillouetted in the clear water. I was scared they were still being worn by a DEAD BODY, but it just some blue jeans. Then I noticed something else, and then something else. One of the items was 5 or 6 rod and reel combos tangled up. The other thing I saw was a duffle bag. I pull the duffle bag in and it has a tackle box, full of tackle, a dewalt radio/battery charger and 3 or 4 batteries in it. All I could think is somebody capsized in the night and left everything. The radio had a nome on it, "Chuck Jack" . So if Chuck Jack is out there reading this, PM me, I got your gear. BTW the Dewalt radio still works.

I do live on a public lake so I have caught numerous poles close to the fishing piers, mostly spin casters, and/or catfish rigs. One spring I went in a cove that I have caught a few green carp in during the early prespawn. I was fishing a rattle trap in shallow water, 3' or less, and I set the hook. I fight for a second, but this is not fighting back. I figure a stick, but no it was a rod and reel combo. An older green Abu Garcia on a 6' rod. Well my brother looks at it and laughs. Well we fish out of the cove and my neighbor and his cousin are fishing on down the lake. We fish for a little while and then they come by to BS and see if we are doing any good. I say no, but I did catch a rod and reel in that cove. The rod is still in the bottom of the boat and they are about 50-75' away. Well, my neighbors cousin says "I lost a rod in that cove last year. It was a green Abu Garcia on a 6' Wal-Mart rod...". I told him well, "I caught your rod". So we trolled over and gave him the rod back. I owned that rod for about 5 minutes. It is unusual to catch a rod, but to catch a rod that belongs to someone else, that I know, and that person is also fishing the same day, very unusual.

The strangest thing I caught, I was in a bass tournament at Trace lake in Mississippi, on a Tuesday night FJ, I caught a turtle with a texas rigged worm. Catching a turtle may not be that uncommon, but I caught this one in the front left foot, in the webbing between the toes. I took a long pair of pliers to get my hook back.

This spring while striper fishing ancored in the river using a planerboard,we had a hard hit,my friend gets the rod, which was a light action rod,and it sure has a big bend in it,he is hollering and several other boats around us are looking,he asks, are they looking,,I say yep he continues to put on the show, the fish gets close to the boat,I get at the back of the boat to net it and here comes a four foot long tree limb,,I tell my friend this deal is going from woo we to oh no,,I reach down and get the limb and as I get it I feel the jerk of a fish,I pick up the limb and hear folks laugh,I tell Donny to reel, then I netted the striper and hushed the laughing.Id love to had that on video,.I had the limb in one hand and the fish in the other

Well. this weekend I donated a 15 pound anchor to the great depths during a night tournament. Had to cut the line. Oddly enough, its the same anchor in the picutre above. The anchor I found will be its replacement. The one lost and its replacement are both pictured above. Go figure.

Caught a pontoon ladder once. And one time, an old casting rod. Both caught while trolling...
