    MPerry,

I've got a good real life story. I was fishing in a canoe with a buddy at Rachel's III pond on Ft. Gordon in 1980. It was spring and the bream were bedding. We were at the dam end and noted some ativity up on the opposite end of the pond. So I decided we should paddle up and check it out. Finally made it to the other end and noted two large cotton mouths traversing the water near the bank. I decided to throw a tiny rebel topwater lure over to see what reaction I would get. As I reeled the lure back both snakes followed right to the canoe, like two sentry dogs. As they got closer my partner up front was getting nervous and his voice was quivering as he screamed for me to hand him the paddle. I passed it up to him and both snakes were sitting three feet from the front of the canoe. He reached over and smacked the closest one over the head stunning it and the other one (twice the size of the one he hit) proceeded back to the shore. I told him to grab the one in the water and he gave me some advice on where I could put some of my anatomy. He handed the paddle back to me and I poked at the snake and it seemed to be dead or out cold. I reached over and grabbed it behind the head and put it in our fish basket, handing it to him to set up on the front deck of the canoe. Well it came to, and every move he made the rest of the morning would generate a strike from the fish basket, making him jump like he'd been shot. Of course I was sitting back in the back laughing my arse off. We finally pulled out and took it home where we proceeded to let it out of the fish basket and I was going to chop its head off with an old axe. Well it moved a bit quicker than I anticipated, and the next thing you saw was me running all over the yard chopping the lawn up trying to cut this snake's head off. I finally succeeded. We skinned it and decided to eat the snake. Little did we know that cotton mouth doesn't quite taste like rattlesnake. Worst tasting mud I ever put in my mouth, but it sure made for an interesting morning.

You are one sick dude!!!! Your lucky to be alive! If you had put that snake in the front of the boat with me, someone would have died!!!!! I probably would have drowned trying to get away from that thing!

I can't beleive your friend didn't throw the basket in the water. I would not want one in the boat with me even if it was in a basket.

This made me think of a funny Bill Dance bloopers I had seen. I hate those snakes in the trees. I am from AZ and we dont have a whole lot of snakes around. Now we are in MO and they are everywhere at the lake. What a culture shock it has been. videobomb.com/posts/show/1182 Hopefully this link will work to see the Bill Dance clip.

Let me start by saying I am not afraid of many things. But snakes are one thing I am deathly afraid of. Sorry to offend anyone but my thinking is the only good snake is a dead one. Anyway on to my story.

We moved here to Ok in Sept of 2004. Just after we got settled in I took my kids fishing here on Lake Eufaula just a couple miles from our house. The kids were catching quite a few brim/bluegills. I wasn't having much luck with the bass. Anyway, my son was using a mico rod and real and hooked into a decent gill that was giving him some trouble getting to the shore. I walked over to him to coach him through it. He finally got it to the bank but had to drag it over some rocks that were about 1 inch under the water at the shore. As the fish crossed over the rocks this bright orange snake with a diamond patterned came out of the rocks and started chasing the fish. I grabbed the pole from my boy and lifted the fish out of the water. The snake came up on a rock about 2 ft below us. Of course this sent my daughter screaming towards the truck. I wanted so bad to follow and would have if I wasn't tryin to keep my boy from trying to get a closer look. It didnt scare him one bit. The snake itself just stayed there watching the fish sway back and forth in the air. I tried everything to make it leave and it wouldnt. I stomped at it. Kicked rocks. All it did was watch the fish and HISS. If the fish came close it would strike. I finally took the fish off the hook and tossed it by the snake. The snake grabed the fish, went back into the water and swam about 10 ft away and climbed back out onto another rock where we watched it eat the fish. To this day I still do not know what kind of snake it was. If it hadn't come out from under the water I would have swore it was a copper head. My daughter has not been fishing with me since. And I don't go much anymore and wont until I get a boat......lol

When I first started fishing for crappie during the spawn a good friend of mine would take me wading at Arkabutla Lake in north Mississippi. He'd tell me not to worry about those little banded water snakes, I never did. He said if you feel uncomfortable about them swimming towards you, just tap them in the head with the tip of your pole, everytime they would swim in another direction after being hit. Then one day I learned how to make a cottonmouth mad. I really did not know what a cottonmouth looked like. I tapped that sucker on the head and that snake chased me out of the water. It follwed me up the bank and chased me down. I finally found a tree limb and beat that sucker to death. Now I know what a cottonmouth looks like. When I wade and see one swimming, I freeze. I watch that sucker till it is out of site. Laying all bull aside, those water snakes are as scared of you as you are of them. Just keep your eyes on the lookout for for the blacks ones.

There ain't but two kinds of snakes in this world, on land it's a rattler, on the water it's a moccasin. I'll defend myself from both. Ferdi

I've yet to be chased by a snake and would not hurt one but might change my mind if I have one trying to chase me down.

My wife and I were fishing the Tippicanoe river between Lake Shafer and Freeman last year. (she lays in the sun I fish) A snake was swimming by and I pointed it out to her. She started running around the boat trying to find a safe place. LOL man I own a 20' ranger and there is not much room to run! The snake started coming to the boat and she was yelling "KILL IT KILL IT." I was laughing so hard. The snake turned and went to shore. To see her hug a seat screaming KILL IT was sooooooooooooo funny.
