I don,t remember the 997 but my 5200,s will loose waas lock quite a bit up here on a really overcast day---garmin map 76 stays locked pretty good and its in the worst spot on the boat
Never have these problems on a clear day

My unit has lost lock a time or two but is able to correct the problem in a short period of time. It occurs mostly when there is heavy cloud cover or when I'm under a thick canopy of trees.

Mine would recover in just a short period of time, but I have never had it to lose communications like it did last weekend. The weather was great.
Our local T.V. station said there would be some interuptions last week with solar flars or something like that, it may have something to do with the satalites??

I used my new 797 on Tuesday for the first time and had the same problem that others have talked about with the GPS side of Hummingbird. I had all my waypoints loaded on the 797 and it would either be way off or would reception all together.
Thankfully I read on this forum not to trust the Hummingbird GPS and had my Garmin 378 that I have used for three years and has never stirred me the wrong way.
LOL
