The sonar portion is great for me. I just think some work needs to be done on the GPS portion. I can't tell when I'm close to the waypoint or not. May be me, I'll keep playing with it. Some of the commands are not available on all screens so you have to go back to another screen to pull up let's say the scrolling speed, so that you can change it. Then you have to go back to the full screen and see if it's what you want. If not back to the other screen to try and fix it.

I way prefer Fugawi to any of their software for managing waypoints, routes or tracks.

One question I do have is why do you think Garmin sonar is better than the Humminbird 997? I need some examples. We are hearing diffrent information from our consumers. I would like to know this information. It may be a setting on the unit we may be able to help you change to get the information you are looking for.
    Joby,

I will have to agree with Crappie Hound on this, I have said this on the yahoo board. I find it very hard to get back to a way point with the current humminbird design. if you mark a spot, then later tell the unit to go to that point it will draw a straight line to that point from your current location. That might be great for open water fisherman. But using this in a standing timber lake or a lake/river with bends makes it tougher. The garmins tell you the distance as does the birds, but gives you real time pointer to follow. Which helps in showing that you need to move left or right as you travel to the spot. This really helps once you get 15-10 feet, this helps in directing you to the correct spot. With the bird you have to try to follow the line, which is very tough driving a boat in a exactly straight line. Also the humminbird seems to lag in updating distance and mapping. I have found myself going around in circles looking and watch the map with the waypoint trying to find the spot. Even zooming as small as I can get, I still have trouble. Here is a picture of the garmin navigation screen. Its easy to understand.

    Joby,
Thanks for accepting the criticism in a professional manner. I hope I was not too hard on the h-birds. I along with many others would really like to see the option of making the waypoint icon/mark smaller than it actually is. It would give us more precise positioning when trying to locate isolated/small structure. We zoom in to 20ft. and we still have this huge blue dot that covers too much of an area. Reducing the size of this dot would make navigating easier also. We would be able to see more of the map/ contour lines if the dot could be smaller and not take up as much screen space. The boat/position indicator could also be smaller for the same reasons.
I do prefer my garmin 240 20 degree cone angle sonar over the humminbird 20 degree cone angle. I could be the fact that i have used the Garmin 240 for the past ten years and only the humminbird for a year, but I really doubt it. I seem to get more detail/target seperation from the garmin than the Hbird. I seem to get more of a big blob on my Hbird readout and there seems to be more seperation in the bruhpile from the Garmin. I think the garmin shows a small blob with branches sticking out and more fish. I think the Hbird shows a big blob and a few fish. It could be setup of the transducers having an effect too. I once had a matrix 35 on the trolling motor where my garmin is now. I was very disappointed and gave it to my father. Since the waypoint management system is so difficult to share betwenn 997/laptop/Garmin Gps/Easygps/HumminbirdPC I often wish I had it back so that I could purchase the innerlink device and not have the bothersome to transfer through easyGPS and HumminbirdPC. Joby, Thanks for listening. I appreciate it! Todd Miller aka Crappiehunter

    Joby,
I have another complaint that software may be able to fix while I'm on my complaint box. I set the scroll speed close to my trolling speed while side imaging. This also changes my regular sonar scroll speed. So, when I flip from side image to regular sonar I have to increase/change the scroll speed. I want to be able to set my scroll speed for regular sonar at a high setting and be able to set my side image scroll speed at a low setting and not have to go to the menu to change them back and forth when I switch between the two. I apologize for everyone wearing you out today on my behalf. I think we need to take you on a crappie catching trip. Todd Miller aka Crappiehunter

Jody I also agree about the size of boat and the waypoint icons and also wish there was a map that showed everything not just the major lakes. I have the garmin MapSource topo software that shows the whole U.S. every little creek and lake and it is not possible to download on my 997. Wish you would change this or come out with your own topo or map. Thanks for listening.

Joby...I am thankful we have someone from HB that will vsit the site and try and do something to answer our questions and get things fixed. I know that it is difficult when everyone starts blasting away with what they want but we do appreciate the attention.

I know I have said this before but if you all made a descent chord that people could buy and use and not have to piece together, it sure would help us guys out a lot. I don't want to spend all day reading my manual trying to dial in my unit on the water. I get one day a week to fish and that's what I want to do. I've read the manul but "face" time with the unit is the best thing for me.

I think it would behoove HB to re-work thier software packages so that people can transfer waypoints with other units easier. I know there is a problem when trying to use oziexplorer and HB together. Too many hoops my man. I know you all working deligently and I'm holding on to my cash for the next unit when I have seen some progress towards some of these issues.

    Respectfully,

    The Hound

Glad to see people speaking out about likes and dislikes about any equipment.

I doubt that Joby can change a thing for us about form, fit, or function of the equipment, but only report our concerns and tweak the machine. I would also bet my retirement check that he has heard these same complaints many times before. He is just doing his job.

I worked in an engineering environment for years. You are pushed/rushed to get a product out the door. Get the money first, you can always get the product right the second time or third time. Am I not right here you engineers?

We killed a few good people at NASA to keep a schedule. I know this for sure.

    Nothing personal Joby Humminbird.
