    Default Ice fishing with 997?

    WarrenMN,

If you hooked the gps antenna up and rotated your transducer 360 degrees, by virtue of the gps software, you should be able to accurately mark structure anywhere within the distance selected, is this not true? Have you tried this yet? Just thinking out loud here.

I don't think the unit knows which way the transducer is heading. I believe it assumes the unit is looking perpindicular to the direction of travel, so the GPS points are figured by using the location of the unit at the time of the ping and the distance from the transducer to the spot. This assumes that the spot is 90 degrees from the boat's path.

I can designate north. Then, is everything relative to the direction of rotation?

When I did it, I started my turn with the one side looking out on the transducer pointing north, I slowly turned the crank till I went 360°. I practiced it a couple times till I the speed of the rotation didn't quite fill the screen, you can tell by the area at the top and bottom that is blurry.
As for the the unit telling what is where, no. It has no reference other than the coordinate of where you are sitting. The only real reference on the screen is the top of the water column will all be the same coordinate.
Check this page out and you can see what I mean.

If you wanted to be X marks the spot, just sit down at one place and line up from there a direction, you can get pretty close, then move to another hole where the line would be perpendicular to the first. Very accurate.

Just to let you know, I'm not going to be posting as much as I have in the past. I'm not sponsored by Humminbird and I'm afraid I've been burning up to much time at this and I'm kind of in between when it comes to Humminbird and Lowrance. As for my site, it was meant for my mapping so I need to start working on that more. If there is some thing you can't find help with email me. I'll be around, just not as much.
