Default Minn Kota Trolling motor install..Bass Pro

My thoughtful wife purchased a Minn Kota 12v 55 " trolling motor with Co Pilot for me for Christmas. A very nice upgrade from my present transom mount unit.

My boat Lowe 1448 Jon has no wiring, nothing in the way of the things I`ll need to operate the trolling motor. I spoke with Bass Pro via phone and he gave me the following price estimates to install..

$120 per hr ( they estimate 3 hrs of work)
    $100 for necessary parts

I am not mechanical and want it done right and am willing to pay. From the estimate I`ll probably have $500 in the install with Bass Pro

Does this sound like a fair price?

    Thanks!

Labor cost seems about right. The marine dealer I use was 100 an hour last year. Probably some markup on parts. If there is a marine dealer that does service nearby you could get a comparison estimate. Also check how long they warrant their work.

I actually think Bass pro is under estimating the parts cost based on what I think I got from your post.
Here is what I deduced from your post.

New trolling motor is a 55lb thrust bow mount with copilot. Is that correct?

If that is correct I think your going to need the following.
    Mounting bracket for trolling motor
Motor disconnect connectors male and female
Wire from rear to front. Probably 6 ga min.
    Breaker Probably 60 Amp

A 12v 55 ftlbs motor can draw 50 amps. I'd have to look at a voltage drop chart but I figure you need apx 15 to 20 ft of wire to connect rear battery to front trolling motor. I guess 6 ga though.

To me those parts sound like more than $100.

I looked at the voltage drop chart. If you are running wire from the back of the boat to the front for the trolling motor. 3% voltage drop calls for 2ga wire for a round trip length of 30 feet (15 ft for Red plus 15 feet Black) 10% voltage drop calls for 6ga wire.

If you use the trolling motor at max or close to max speed often I would want 4 ga wire. With an 50A Anderson style disconnect connector.

I fish an electric only lake often, in the spring, the shallow water is a 20 to 30 min run at higher speed to get there. On a previous boat I melted the connector on the 12V trolling motor from drawing so much current for too long. I've since switched to a different boat and installed a 36V motor, I upgraded the type of connector to Anderson and installed 4 ga wiring. Going to the 36V I'm normally running less than 80% throttle, should be about 30 amps according to Garmin.
