    Default Battery question

Currently running an minn kota ulterra with 4 group 27 interstate batteries. I do a lot of trolling. Two batteries would not last but about six hours. The four batteries fixed my problem . Just installed a new ultrex on the boat. My batteries are six years old and will be replacing them shortly. Was thinking about trying to go with two group 31 interstate . I know lithium is what a lot of people are using but I don't care for the prices they charge. Anyone trolling with 2 batteries (old style) and have enough juice to run 8-10 hours especially on windy conditions with an ulterra. I know I can go right back to the four group 27 batteries like I have now for 600 bucks cost. Trying to save some space and weight in my boat. I have been told the onboard charger I'm using will not work for lithium. It is an older model guest charger

It would help to know what trolling motor you are using.

I’m using two Duracell 31 AGM on a 80# Terrova. I can go 8-10 hours at 1.7-2.1 mph no problem.
I had Intersate before and they didn’t last but a year. Academy wouldn’t warranty them, I had to ship them back to interstate.

I got the Duracells from Batteries Plus. Been on my boat for four years now. No problem.

We run a 80# Ulterra on 2 Duracell AGM 31 batteries bought from Sam's. In addition, we have 2 Duracell group 27 AGMs, one for starting, boat lights and accessories and the other a deep cycle for Electronics. We go from Light till after dark. Mostly trolling. Never ran out of juice. The 27 running electronics died just after a year, and the local Sam's replaced it with a new one. They each have their own chargers and are plugged in when we get back and kept on until we go again.

Lithium batteries while expensive, seem to be the way to go these days. I sell lead acid batteries made here in the US. They are going up in price with every order I place with my supplier. Most marine batteries only have a 12month warranty, and some less that that. 4 lead acid group 31's batteries are going to run you nearly 200.00 each. That's 800.00, with only a 12mo warranty. May get 4 to 5 years out of them tops. The initial outlay for lithium will be high however you won't be replacing them every 4 or 5 years. Just my thoughts. I have one lithium for my starting and electronics battery. When I need to replace my lead acid batteries for my 24v Ulterra it will be with lithium even though I can buy lead acid at cost.

Lithium are much cheaper in the long run. Getting that little time on 2 group 27 sounds like your batteries are very weak unless you are pulling at 1.5-2mph.

I did the math once and it was something like 40 hours trolling at 1mph for my 80lb mk and 50ah ionic lithium. Its 2 on the remote to go 1mph with the lithium drawing just over an amp, it was about 3.5 on the remote with my lead acids to go the same speed. If i have to lower the motor due to rough water my draw doubles, so thats calm conditions.

To be honest i typically long line at 0.8 this time of year and after fishing all morning i will be at 90-94% remaining depending on wind.
