    Default Lowrance hook 7

I have a lowrance hook 7 fish finder and don’t under stand it .. it shows fish on it at different depths ..I guess. I just don’t know how to use it. I only use the gps , depth and way points on it . I want to learn how to use it for crappie and bass fishing. I’ve been to bass pro shop and they couldn’t help me just wanted to sale me a 1000$ different one . Can someone please help me with this.

    How do you have it set ?? DI -- DI/2d -- 2d ??

Since I got Livescope I use my Hook 7 primarily for mapping/waypoints ... but, before getting LS I used it on DI only, and it did a pretty good job. When I used the DI/2d overlay it gobbed up the screen with too much "stuff".

Understand that the DI ping is a thin line spread to both sides of the transducer at an angle directly related to whether you're using 455kHz or 800kHz, and it's best picture is going to be when you're moving forward at a nice pace. "Fish" are going to show up as little "dots".

Here's some DI images to show you what to look for : (note: these are from my Elite 5DSI, not my Hook 7)

The "dots" around the log above are fish.

There are no fish seen on this downed tree above, and all the "dots" seen in the water column are likely just submerged particles/trash.

Here's what I mean by the DI ping being a thin line ....

The yellow area is the coverage area that DI shows .... the red area is the 2d coverage area. The "areas" shown by the two different colors are "bottom coverage". The 2d ping is a circular cone, so its a narrow area shallow & expands as it goes deeper. The DI ping is angled wider, but a thinner spread of coverage ... but also shows much greater detail.

    455khz vs 800kHz :

A 455kHz cone angle has a greater coverage under water but will return an image with less definition. This is beneficial when scouting new country for the first time. An 800kHz cone angle will get a narrower coverage but with greater detail.

Thanks Jamesdean thanked you for this post

Not exactly sure what you mean by d1 or d2 ...... DI (down image) has no #1 or #2

If you're referring to 2d .... that's the "old" sonar technology that's was used prior to Down Image, Side Image, 360, Forward View (like Livescope)

If that's "exactly" what you see, then there may be something wrong with the unit. I'm referring to the wide white columns and the blue/white checkerboard pattern I see in that picture. May be the camera's fault, but if not and those "things" are always a part of what's showing on the screen .... then you might want to contact Lowrance and see what they say could be causing them.

As far as the "dots" on the screen ... they "may" be fish. I always used the blue pallet coloration, so fish on my screen were always white dots.

From the picture it looks like you have some other setting other than just Down Image on your Hook. I don't remember individual depth markings on "fish" with just the straight Down Image setting. That's with "Fish ID" turned on and would likely only occur if 2d sonar is being used (& not DI) or you have the 2d Overlay setting on your unit (combination of 2d and DI screen info).

I guess what I’m saying is if there is that many fish under boat I just need a dip net and I would have a limit. Lol.. the gps, depth ,speed everything else works fine.. I just don’t understand what I’m looking at.. it shows fish and different size fish at different depths but I can honestly say I’ve never caught one using it..I mean I don’t understand how it can pick up fish going 10mph and then go 35 and the fish on screen don’t move with the speed of boat.. it all seems crazy to me and it drives me crazy.. cause I know the crappie are out in the middle of Kissimmee and I can’t find them.. but when they move into pads it is on ..thank you very much for your help.
