Thread: Question about humminbird finder

I use a similar set-up to pre-scout a new lake or look for new areas to check out on my home lakes.

Last year I had never been on Rend Lake,Il. Justin and I had decided to fish a Crappie Master’s qualifier and hopefully do well enough to make the National Championship.

I set my Helix 12 Mega up on a 12 volt power supply, reclined back, put in my new Great Plains LakeMaster card, and started checking out areas we might be able to catch crankbait crappie in May. I found some river and creek channel areas to try but I also found a very strange geographic area that I still have no idea what was there before the lake was flooded.

The last day of practice we checked it out and found what we needed. We spent the whole tourney day in that area.

We ended up with enough crappie to earn a 5th place finish, a nice check( 5th plus 2nd big fish) , and qualified for the National Championship in Grenada. I’m convinced we wouldn’t have found that area just fishing blindly and might not have had time to find it in practice.

Get your set-up with lake map and start dropping waypoints on areas you’d like to fish when the snow or rain is blowing sideways.

Yes. I have done that often when fishing new locations or trying new spots on a lake. Sometimes you might need to readjust them on the water based on actual sonar/imaging, depending on the accuracy of maps used.
