I have both the livescope and hummingbird. If you are certain you do not want livescope. Then the mega side imaging is way better than garmins. If I had to choose between the two, livescope would not be going anywhere.
I have been looking to get myself a new unit for a while to replace my outdated Helix 5 SI gen1. I think my budget can swing a unit in the 8-9" range. I've kind of settled on deciding between the Garmin UHD 93SV or Helix 8 Mega+ SI. The Garmin is a little cheaper and has a larger screen but from what I can gather it has less pixels and the side imaging leaves something to be desired. The Helix 8 has the smaller screen and is a little more $$$ but it seems like the side imaging and mega+ quality are significant better than the Garmin. If I don't plan to get Livescope (more than I ever see myself spending) is the Helix 8 the obvious choice? It seems like it is but I don't want to overlook anything.

HELIX 8 SI MEGA + can also utilize MEGA 360 ...

I have a Garmin without a livescope and a Humminbird Helix 9 Mega SI and I prefer the Humminbird, although the Garmin is a decent unit for the money.

I had a HB Helix 5 for a couple years and my old eyes just couldnt see the details due to the small screen. Couple years ago I got a Echomap+93sv with Livescope combo ($2500). I primarily fish for Crappie so I went with Livescope. Not sure what type of fishing you do but I will say which ever one you decide on, get the LARGEST Screen you can afford. Bigger is Better!!! It will cost you more up front but at the end of the day you wont regret it.
Thanks, that is the biggest factor that is making me reluctant on the Helix...Its hard to give up 1" of screen size on top of a better price. I mainly do fish for crappie but but I'm not accustomed to having fancy electronics so really a larger screen with any form of mega imaging is going to be a huge upgrade.
