I have the Gen 2 Helix 9 and I have my first preset at the full screen side image, probably around 60-70. Then the second preset is SI/DI, and my third is full screen 2D

I use SI set to scan out 50. Then if I see something in water column that looks like fish I switch to DI to look at it.

I was curious if the top/ bottom split with side image and down image might show better ?
Now you might should do the exact opposite of what I do I have found that on the Side Image, fish look like bright gold dots or dashes, depending on their size. But, I havent been able to have as much time with it on the water as I would like to have.

As I understand on 2 d sonar . amount of surface shown is 3-1 on narrow , 1-1 on medium but have found nothing on wide setting . figured you have to be in deep water, not sure .
IMO the best page setting for searching new waters is the map page, if you've a good map with accurate contours. You can find the ledges, humps, channels and other structure fish typically like to hang out on, THEN go scan those spots with the sonar (I prefer SideVu) first. My opinion only; you might like another way.
