I recently purchased a Helix 12 si. This is the newest on the market. I got it installed Saturday and took the boat out for a spin yesterday to test it out and familiarize myself with the controls. I noticed that the depth, while in 2d, was all over the place. I can see double bottoms. My depth, in reality, was around 13' while the Helix in 2d showed it to be around 23' or so. SI and DI show accurate depths. I know this has been an ongoing issue with some of these Humminbird units but I was hoping that it wouldn't be a problem for me. I did some searching and it seems that a lot of people can eliminate the issue by adjusting their surface clutter to 6-7. This adjustment did not fix the issue for me. The inaccurate depth readings isn't a big deal but it is a huge deal if you try to use Autochart to map some areas.
I called Humminbird support today and discussed the problem with them. The support person told me that Humminbird is making a fix for this issue and it will eventually be released in a future update. In the meantime, she told me to go into settings and change the "Digital Depth Source" to auto. I have not had a chance to get out on the water yet but has anyone else found this to be the remedy to this problem?
This is what HB is recommending ...:
Some are simply turning off CHIRP in the 2d bands, Beam Frequency to 200kHz and getting better digital depth stability ...
