For my instance I was curious because I could use the transom mount transducer on my pontoon and use the SI at the console and use it for the 2D on my smaller boat.

US2 is 2d only ... No imaging (SI or DI) ...

CHIRP is basically a different way to transmit the sound pulses (2d, DI, or SI) ...

I still dont see a clear answer to the OP question.

OK so the US2 will work with a Chirp head unit.

But he will only get standard 2d sonar returns? and not chirp?

So as said it would be a waste to get a Chirp unit.

I love analogies. So let me try and explain this way. Think of your US2 as a 1lb ball peen hammer. It is universal and will " work " for standard applications. But would you use it to drive a railroad spike or on the other end of the spectrum. Try to drive a tack with it. I suspect you would not.

To get the most out of your investment. Use what the MFD was designed to operate with.
