Default A Question About Helix 9/10 Units

I'm new here and have been reading for quite some time. Fish quite a bit but just upgraded boat and electronics. Was wondering if it was okay to turn the Helix 9/10 units on out of the water to adjust settings, color palette, etc...? In other words, can I take my time an do in the garage or should the transducers be submerged before powering the units up? I have heard it both ways so I thought I would register and ask the experts. Thanks in advance.

While it won't hurt the unit to operate in Normal out of the water - you would need GPS reception from the satellites in Normal mode to have access to any Chart Views or Chart settings for home study ...

Boot the unit into Simulator mode and you will have access to all features and settings in the unit ...

Press Menu during startup when the HB logo appears ...
Choose "Simulator" from the choices in the popup ...

Settings changes during Simulator operation will be remembered by the unit and utilized upon the next Normal operation boot up ...

Thanks so much. That is exactly what I was needing.

Would I nee to change the settings of each particular screen/view? Really all I'm wanting to add to each screen are GPS coordinates and maybe the time.

Change "User Mode" under the Setup tab to "Advanced" to have access to all menus ...

User mode in "Normal" hides some options ...

Digital readouts are default at "Overlay" which only shows depth, speed, and water temp (depth, speed, and COG in Chart Views) ...

To get other digital data options in Sonar views (not Chart Views nor Chart combo views) ... :

*Press Menu twice to get into the Main Menu System ...
*Cursor over to the Setup tab ...
*Cursor down to Digital Readouts ...
*Cursor right or left To select "Boxes" ...
*Press Exit to get back into the Setup tab options ...
*Cursor down to *Select Readouts" ...
*Choose the data options desired in each readout box ...
    -----

To get other digital data options in Chart Views And Chart combo views ... :

*Press Menu twice to get into the Main Menu System ...
*Cursor over to the Setup tab ...
*Cursor down to Digital Readouts ...
*Cursor right or left To select "Boxes" ...
*Press Exit to get back into the Setup tab options ...
*Cursor down to *Select Nav Readouts" ...
*Choose the data options desired in each readout box ...

Note 1: Some readout boxes in Chart Views are hard coded and cannot be changed (dependent on software version) ...

Note 2: Temp will not be available in the choices unless the above procedure is performed in Normal operation ... because the unit cannot detect the temp probe is connected (in Simulator) ...

On the topic of the Helix 9, is the Navionics South card any good?
I've been told yes and no and I've also been told to just make my own with the Lakemaster card. I live in Northwest Louisiana.
    Any suggestions?

You can verify the coverage for your area by zooming in on the Navionics web app here ...

Once again, Rickie takes the time to help an angler and at the same time helps dozens of others like me that read his responses. Thanks, Rickie.
