Best to go with a SI unit. Humminbird units have very good range in shallow water.
What's your budget?
What is the best fish finder for finding bluegills and crappie in shallow water. Could the transponder be turned sideways or do they make a very wide beam transponder for shallow water

As BobB said. It is a fact that an HB si unit...set on 455 kHz.....can find beds out about 50 feet in water as shallow as 2.5 feet. I have done it quite a bit.

Im curious to know what all is said on here.

If you only want down image then I recommend Raymarine Dragonfly series.. Best downview on the market.. If you want sideview then lookaround.. Garmin makes the striker or echomap series that's cheaper then the humminbird.. If you go Garmin make sure you get the gt52 transducer.. Shop around on internet and you can save a few hundred bucks... I got mine for 1/3 cheaper then in stores..
Oh.. And on side image don't go less then a 7" screen.. Even if you have to give up other cells and whistles.. 5" screen is fine on down image and sonar...
Like others here said you can't beat side imaging for shallow water. Here is where I posted a shallow water picture of my Humminbird 899 SI sonar unit. The new Helix models are said to have even clear and better looking screens. Like msn said bigger screens are always better when choosing side imaging.

Two questions for scrats image.
1. A little to the right and left of the center line, is that the water column?
2. Immediately left of the Center line, what is that?
Thank you for posting that image!

The dark sections are representing the water column ...

The echo just to the left of the center line (in scrat's image) is an echo reflection caused by an obstruction on the boat on the left side of the xducer (lower unit, another xducer, live well screen, etc) ...
