    Default Fish finder help

Ok all you smart people I have a favor/question for ya. I have a Garmin Echo 100 on the front and a Humminbird 757C on my console and all I know how to do is read the depth and see blips go across hoping that's fish. Are they a way to know what I am looking at as far as types or sizes of fish? I am dumb at this stuff but want to learn it badly. Any direction would be greatly appreciated in advance..

Practice, read archives on this forum, practice, YouTube, practice, invite a knowledgeable angler fishing with you, and finally practice! I am still in the practice stage, but love the too infrequent times I see what I interpret as fish, and drop and catch them!

Basicly 2D does not show a very large area under the transducer unless you are in deep water. Maybe these youtube videos will explain what you will be seeing and how big and area you will be seeing.

you tube is a great resource for sonar unit interpretation. Another option is to go out with someone and watch them use there sonar unit(s). A tip I picked up this week was to keep a fish on the line and put it under your transducer to see what it looks like on your sonar unit. If your unit is capable of taking images, mark the spot and review the images later. If not, study the image as long as the fish stays on the screen.

Take a medium sized round bobber attached to a line and weight it down with enough weight to sink it ...

Pass it thru the sonar cone directly under the xducer at different depths ...

It must be within the sonar cone or the sonar can't "see" it ...

The bobber will emulate the fish swim bladder as the fish is swimming thru the sonar cone ...
