    Default Humminbird 597CI HD Help

I have a Humminbird 597CI HD which will not read the bottom on the unit, it jumps all over the place, even when the boat is stationary. I have tested the unit on two different transducers and it does this on both. I have uploaded the most current version, same problem. The unit was purchased new and only has 36 hours on it. I have seen other folks complain about this doing a google search but unable to find the cause. I have bench tested the unit and placed the transducer in a deep 55 gallon drum, same problem, everything else seems to work fine. Any suggestion? Thanks

Have you tried Restore Defaults ... ??

Is there another unit on the boat running at the same time causing crosstalk interference ...??

First of all thanks for your response from Cadiz, I have set it back to restore defaults and no change, It is a stand alone unit and not connected to any other devices on the boat. I removed it from the boat the other day and made a power cord for the unit so I could bench test it connected to a battery I have in the garage, play around with it in the garage. I also have a 55 gallon drum in the garage and placed the ducer in the tank, still no consistent readings, jumps from 4.2 feet and all the way up to 90 feet. I'm somewhat aggravated the unit only has 36 hours on it, if it had a ton of hours and used hard probably not so mad.

Two things I can think of to try, go into setting and set your max depth to around 10 feet or so more than the deepest water you are in, second try turning down the sensitivity, my 561 bird depth reading will freak out sometimes if I have the sensitivity turned up to high in shallow water. Hope this helps

    You can also try ...:

*SwitchFire Clear (and adjust Sensitivity to an acceptable amount of clutter) ...

*Digital Depth Source (under the Sonar tab) set to "2d Element" ...

I have no clue why it works, but setting the max depth manually worked for the same problem with my 596 and 597. But just as and added band aid, I ran a ground wire from the skag on the trolling motor to the negative wire from the battery.

Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.
The two loudest sounds are a gun that goes bang when it is supposed to go click and one that goes click when it is supposed to go bang.
