If your 9ti has (USA insight)it has built in base mapping, so no you don't have to have the card in. I believe if you go to charts, menu, chart options, you can choose lowrance, navionics,or cmap.
I bought a Lowrance Elite 9Ti late last year and am about to start using it. It came with CMAP Insight PRO. This is the confusing part. It has a mini sd card for cmap in the slot. Does this have to stay in the unit to utilize the mapping or does it come built into the unit? I can take the card out and it seems like all the data is still there. Maybe it's saved in memory? I was playing with downloading community maps from the CMAP Genesis social maps this evening and I have to remove the Insight Pro card to put in my card with the social maps.

Stainless thanked you for this post
I'll check that tomorrow. Curious as to why it would have a card if it weren't needed.
Ah, you probably have the World Wide Basemap, easy way to check is look under system, and look at 'about' all the info about your unit is there.
