Default Helix 7 Inaccurate Depth Reading

I have two Helix 7's with sonar and GPS. On both units when I am in water 10 or less the depth reading bounces up and down erratically. The bow unit has universal sonar. I had the same problem on my 597 CIHD. These are brand new units installed on a new boat at the dealer so I'm sure they are correctly placed. Any suggestions??? Maybe my settings are wrong...I have the depth on auto and use the clear mode on switchfire.

You're already running Switchfire Clear ... That and reduce sensitivity is the most common suggestion for erratic depth readings ...

The two things that I had to do for my 597 was to manually set the maximum depth and run a ground wire from the keel on the TM to the negative side of the electrical connection. Hope this helps. That erratic reading just about drove me over the edge.

I reset the factory default settings and found the problem is probably that I reduced all surface clutter. Once I increased the clutter the depth read accurately. I will continue to monitor the reading.

1 point about the Surface Clutter setting is that it seems backwards ...

*Lower number means = show less clutter ...
*Higher number means = show more clutter ...

That is correct I had no clutter showing at all. I increased the clutter just a couple numbers and the depth read accurate
