    Default Humminbird antenna questions

Are the internal GPS's just as good as the external antennas. What would be the good or bad(extra $100+) reasons for hooking up a external GPS antenna to a sonar that has already got internal GPS.

Biggest thing is being able to mount external as close as possible to transducer. This allows to mark your way point closer to what you are reading off transducer. Say unit is 15 ft from ducer and you mark way point, that increases the distance by that much in all directions when your trying to get back on your waypoint. Hope that makes sense.

Buddy were both off more then 15ft. LOL But I agree, I always try to mount the antenna as close to the Transducer as I can get it. On my Helix 10 SI, the unit is mounted within 3ft so internal does not matter. But on my old 987C SI I had them 10 ft apart and getting on top of crappie beds was like trying to find a dollar in the middle of the interstate.

The internal hardware of the external antennas and the internal antennas are the same (of the present available HB GPS antennas) ...

Only the AS GPS HS antenna is different because of the added magnetic compass ...

Don't know about present day HB's, but I have a 788 ci (internal) and a 988 with external and the 988 is much better. I doesn't jump around on speed and path like the internal. Could be better processing but in MHO signal pick up with the puck is better. Accuracy.... hard to say.

988 should have a better processor then the 788. Or that was what I read I think.. Same as my Helix 10 SI and 987 SI the 10 is way better then the 987 was back in the day.

Didn't some earlier internal units use 13 channel receivers vs 25 channels ones being used now?

The discontinued AS GR 16 did indeed use fewer channels ...but I'm not sure of how many ... or if the "16" indicated the number of channels ...

Question --doesn't the AS GPS HS antenna also read direction EX.--North, South, etc. so u can always know what side u are going over ur brush pile, logs etc.
