This is a good unit. I have a hds 5- gen 2 and hds7- gen 3 on my boat. They both will link together but the gen 3 will preform Side imaging and down imaging if you buy the extra transducer. I would recommend on seeing the difference in price between the Gen 2 and Gen 3. If there isn't much cost difference I would go with the Gen 3 if you ever consider using SI or DI.

I bought the same unit a couple weeks ago. It was too hard to pass for that price. I am using it on the bow with the HDI transducer, so it will do the down imaging on the bow that I want. Trying to find a day to try it out. I wanted a Gen 3, but a thousand dollar price difference was too good to pass up. I have a Gen 1 HDS 7 that wouldn't share map chips with my console unit, which was the main thing I wanted. Its my first touch unit, and I have played with in the driveway. So far, so good. It will do the side imaging if I get another Structure scan transducer. I know it doesn"t have CHIRP and a few other new features, but it will do more than I need it to do. Actually contemplated buying another and using my structure scan with it on the console. I like Lowrance, but there is nothing wrong with Humminbird, or Garmin for that matter. Its all what you get used to using. I just like the fact that if it is an HDS unit, it is compatible with all other generations of HDS units, sharing waypoints, etc., other than a Gen 1 not sharing map chips(and could get around that if I go can extra map chip) with Gen 2 or 3 units. Nice thing is it networks with only a ethernet cable if you want to add units.

The HDS9 is a touch unit so it has the structure scan circuitry built in it. All that is required for Side scan or down scan is the proper transducer. The HDI transducer included in this combo will work for 2d and downscan.

Gen3 touch price is outrageous. I can't see upgrading from Gen2 touchers just for the added features.

history has shown when they come out with a "new gen" the price of the current model really takes a dive. Rule of thumb...stay one gen behind.
