One of the fliers I got this weekend, either Cabelas or BPS, had the Elite7 Chirp for $499. Think is was $200 off and that is a good unit, but if you can swing it the HDS 7 touchscreen is the sweetest DF I've owned to date.

Like Ray said, that chirp unit is good for the money. But need to check Cabelas, Bass Pro and BBG marine right now. Some really good units out there in your price range right now.

I should have mentioned that I got my units from Brian and BBG and he usually matches or beats the big box stores on price and service. Give him a call before you buy and check him out. Plus he is a site sponsor as are several others. I always try to buy from one of them whenever possible.

Just got a Garmin 73SV on black friday for $499.00. See in Cabela's sale paper for $549.00. Really like mine.

The new Striker series from Garmin will be a fantastic stand alone unit for those that don't need networking or contour mapping ...

It does have chartplotting ...which is simply a boat icon moving on a blank screen ..:where marking and returning to waypoints is basically maneuvering the boat icon back to the marked waypoint (similar to some handheld GPS devices that don't have mapping) ...

CHIRP in these lower to mid priced units is somewhat of a "buzz word" ...and still TBD if CHIRP is going to be of any benefit to the shallow water fisherman ...
