Your 788 can benefit greatly from the AS GPS HS antenna ...
It does away with the donut and shows the direction the boat is pointing constantly ...

I am looking at the Garmin 73dv and was wondering if anyone had experience with the gps at slow speeds. I like to spider rig and with my current HB 788 I get the doughnut and find it hard to get on top of marked spots easily. I am usually trolling in the .5 to .8 range. Anyone with a garmin I would like to know if its any better. Thanks

I moved my 788 with external antenna from console to bow and put a 73sv at console. So far the Garmin has never seemed to get lost. The 788 does better with the external antenna but still shows the donut a lot but the antenna I have is an AS 50 I think. The Garmin shows speed in hundredths and hasn't jumped around any.
The AS GR50 is the older standard 50 channel GPS antenna ... While being more accurate than its predecessor (the AS GR16) ... It still has the donut ...
Only the HB AS GPS HS antenna (with an internal magnetic compass) does away with the donut ...(there are variations for other brands also) ...

Do you like the 73 sv I was reading on catfish they don't show fish on side view I got one too
Sorry for the late reply. Yes I really like it. I mostly crappie fish and use the side view looking for brush and other structure. It has never lost reading depth up to 40mph (fast as my boat will go), but I have a small rooster tail off transducer. Still learning how to adjust things. Underwater brush and standing tress are clear as a crystal. Maps for a couple lakes I fish are not the best but I didn't think they would be before I bought it. Hope I can keep from knocking transducer off when TVA starts bringing lakes up this spring and floats all the limbs off the banks.
What the difference in the echo map 73 side view and yours do you see fish
I'm still trying to learn to tell what is fish on side view. I think they are shiny spots, but I have not spent very much time on the side view. Just been out 3 times since putting it on. I am going to have to leave fishing poles at the house and spend some time using it.
