I have the 899 and LOVE it! Be hard to say one or the other. Lowrance has some features i like too. Like the different icons for waypoints when u mark one. If you get the HD transducer with the 899, the image porbably couldnt be beat. Humminbird is very user friendly and there is a HUGE humminbird network in this site that is very eager to help. I would say if your new to it then go with humminbird. You will get all kinds if tips from this site and they can answer EVERY question you could have about em. Nothing like having a network lol! As far as the units themselves tomáto-tomahto. Just be personal preference.

Like my 899. Have the HD transducer also. Sharp clear images. Only con is the screen is not bigger! LOL but then again you pay for it (1199).

I have installed some 999's and the images really can't be touched by anything else in the price range. Coming from Lowrance 2d you will see some differences. The HB is as good it just looks different. Tough to explain but it takes some getting used to. The Si/Di more than makes up for having to adjust to the 2d.......

With some careful shopping and HB's rebate going on you might find the 999 in a range you can afford.

I have looked at them several times and just can't seem to get use to the sonar screen, everything else looks good. I really don't like how they tie up the left hand side of the screen with temp, speed,ETC.

Universalmania has got the 899 for $890.00. I paid $999.00 last March and have enjoyed it since. Found crappie yesterday with it with sonar/down imaging screen, cystal clear. Love the Birds, made in the USA and great support.

This can all be taken off in settings.

The readout boxes can only be removed in the full screen SI view ...

The readout boxes are transparent in the 2d views ...
