Default electrical dummy needs help wiring new Lowrance HDS 7 power cord

got my ducers installed and ready to mount and power on new unit. opened the package and there are two cords out of the part that connects to the unit. one is for power and other is for 0183. none of the wires has connectors on them and I am not sure how to proceed. several questions:

    1. do I need a separate battery for the unit, or can I hook it to my starting battery or my trolling motor battery - both are 12V - I often fish for 10-12 hours at a time, with trolling motor used quite a large part of that time (say 2/4 hours on and off).

    2. the pin connector that connects to the unit's power socket has two cords. One (10-18VDC fuse ATC 3) has a red, a black, and a yellow wire. I assume I just crimp a connector on each (after connecting the supplied fuse to the red) and hook red to positive and black to negative. what the heck do I do with the yellow one?

    3. the other (NMEA 0183) has blue, green, orange, yellow, and a ground wire. do I crimp these individually, some together(transmit: yellow/blue) (receive: Orange/green), or what? what do I connect them to. what is the ground for?

Sorry for so many questions, but don't want to blow up my new unit out of ignorance on my part.

    Paul

it's a Gen 2 touch with side scan, if that matters.

All you need is the Red with fuse and Black ground. The yellow is if you have a LSS box. And wire to start battery. The nema wires just cut staggered length an tape off.

lss2 is built in. not sure what you meant by "...and wire to start battery". also, why are "nema" wires?

thanks for you quick answer on the basics. Paul

duh on my part!! never mind on the wire to start battery question, I see that u r telling me to wire the unit to my start battery.

well, duh again. I c that nema is reference to the NMEA wires - just transposed a couple of letters.

will hook up tomorrow and head to the river to give it a test run and make sure my ducers are working properly.

    thanks again, Paul

    Ibmack:

Wilbur is correct. Hook the Red wire to power, black to ground. Make sure to put in the 3 amp inline flat fuse. I would connect to he starting battery. As you are using your trolling motor most of the time. Hooking to the TM battery can cause RF interference.

As for the YELLOW wire in that power bundle: The yellow wire is utilized by lowrance to be able to "wake" up any device connected on your network. Every lowrance device you buy (another fish finder, structure scan,...) will have the same wire setup with a YELLOW wire. You will bundle those together.

LSS2 is NOT built in. LSS2 is a seperate module that comes and is utilized as an ethernet hub to link your structure scan unit with your fish finders on your boat. If you didn't get two transducers with your fish finder, then you don't have structure scan and an LSS2 module. IF you did, then you will have a box about the size of half a cigar box with three yellow ethernet ports on one side, a power port and transducer port on the other. This would come with it's own power cable.

Hope that helps. All other wires can be taped off. Those are utilized for NMEA applications as well as radar.

thanks for the confirmation. I already have both the transducers mounted. have decided to get a ram mount for stability in choppy water. I fish in the Arkansas River in Little Rock about half the time and it can get a bit rough when it's windy.

The OP has a Touch, the LSS-2 IS built in.

I have mine wired to a fuse panel under my console for several reasons. There is less chance of it picking up RF interference from other wires that come into the console from the engine. It keeps from having to run a ton of wires to my battery, it helps keep everything neat and I like having all my fuses in one handy location. I use Blue Water fuse panels that have a ground buss bar on the panel. I have two #10 wires to my starting battery with a large fuse at the battery, that's plenty to handle everything on my boat running at the same time.

Nothing wrong with going straight to the battery if you choose to do it that way.

Thanks Justin. I know the LSS-2 IS built in to my unit, the other fellow either has older technology, or just didn't know that the Touch is built in. Since I just have a small 14' jon boat with no console, I will go direct to battery and tidy up the wiring with ties/clamps .
