Default "Contour" setting on Humminbird 998

Just wondered if any of you favor the "contour" setting when running your side-imaging on your Humminbird? (included on 2012 models and downloadable to others). As I understand it, it eliminates the water column on the normal SI image and simply shows the lake or river bottom all the way across underneath the boat. I've been trying it a bit and kinda like that view, especially if I'm just looking for bottom structure.

It's kind of a cool feature... But I, personally, like seeing the dark water column ...

I feel that the "dark water column" is the hardest aspect of a SI image for the human mind to visualize...(it's so different from any sonar image we've ever been exposed to)...

The "Contour" is a great learning tool for those just starting to interpret the SI image...removing the "dark water column" to only see the bottom coverage lays the groundwork of SI interpretation into helping a new user understand how that SI image on the screen actually relates to the lake bottom under the boat...

Normal sonar (2d and DI) have an screen image view of "looking thru the side of an aquarium"...

SI has an screen image view of "looking down thru the top of the aquarium"....

IMO..."Contour" is the best feature HB has ever put into their units for new user's benefit of understanding SI ...

Kosmo, your pic is very good, and to be honest- I haven't played with that setting very much at all. It does make looking at SI somewhat easier to interpret. I will play with that soon, and I do appreciate your knowledge and pics! Many thanks!
