Default Portable depth finder power source

Greetings all! I am new to this great site and this is my first post.
First of all many thanks to you all for your willingness to share your knowledge and skills; I have learned much from your posts.

I'm curious to know is it advisable/safe to connect my Hummin Bird 535 portable depth finder to my 12 volt trolling motor source? Is there a potential for damage to the depth finder.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I dont think there's any "damage" that can come to the depthfinder but you MAY get interference from it. It's best to have it's own power source but you can try it first just to see. Make sure an inline fuse is in the hot wire on the df.

    And welcome from GEORGIA.

Welcome aboard. What part of Va do you live? As for the battery, while it is not advised there are many of us that do connect them to the TM battery. Sometimes you just don't have any other choice. When/if the battery starts to get low just turn the Bird off and you will be just fine. If you want to play it safe a depth finder will operate for a very long time on a motorcycle or lawnmower battery.

    Hi Guys!!
I hail from the Tidewater area and do most of my fishing at Northwest River, Blackwater Creek, and the Suffolk lakes.
Many thanks for the input; I never thought of using a lawn mower battery!! That's a great idea!! As far as using the trolling motor power source you have convinced me not to do that due ti the motor "noise" that will be induced into the sounder.
Best Regards to all and be safe out there,
    Mike

If you want to do so, but don't want the noise, you need to setup a proper distribution point. You can get battery distribution blocks from all sorts of places, including amazon. By using a distro block, you can put a noise filter inline with the items you wish to isolate. The other option, as mentioned prior, is to add a second, smaller battery to your setup. If you have to go with a non-deep cycle, you can get away with it, but my recommendation is to buy a second, smaller deep cycle. I have used both setups with success. The noise filters are found easily as car stereo amplifier noise filters. Don't put the noise filter on the trolling motor or the main positive feed, only on the smaller accessories that need the filtering.

    Good Luck!

If you are looking for a small battery that will hold enough power for all day, look over at cabelas for their rechargeable 12 V 8amp. I use mine ice fishing and run the lowrance 520 and also the gps antenna all day with no problems. It is 4x6x2.5"

These are great little batteries, powered my 997for about 6 hours plus on the ice in 20degree temps. Sometimes you can catch them on sale with the charger for 19.99-regular price about 25-26 bucks. Note I still use this battery with my HDS-8 in the house when playing with the HDS8 at my desk-great little battery............
