That's correct, platinum will not work - I tried. Premium does though.

Yep, took the platinum back tonight and exchanged it for the premium and loaded it up in the DSI and it loads up fine.

Rsw, also make sure that you have the door to the slot screwed tight. I thought i had bought a defective card, but discovered it was ok when i kept finger pressure on the door and the unit would read the card. if i removed my finger pressure it did not read it. it is avery fickle deal.

Smally .... the Elite 5 DSI card slot does not "screw" shut. But, in any case, I did have a similar experience as you. That tiny micro-sd card can be tough to handle. You have to make sure that you push it into the slot as far as it will go ... and then make sure you close the trap door until it's flush with the outer surface of the unit. To retrieve the card from the slot, you have to "push" the card "in" & then release your finger pressure before pulling on the card to remove it.

If the card is not locking into place, and needs extra pressure to hold it in & work ... then your unit is defective & may need to be repaired/replaced.

What's your water clarity? I'm assuming it 3 -4 feet
    Sensitivity @ 8
Auto off, Zoom off, depth range 25 (may show too much bottom, if so, go back to auto)
color palette, purple (can see it better in strong light)
    Surface clarity, low
Trolling? if so try to match ping or refresh speed with trolling speed
    Noise rejection? Low or off
    Know I forgot something....

You sure you're referring to a Lowrance Elite 5 DSI/Chartplotter ?? There is no setting to change ping speed to match trolling speed on this unit, or sensitivity, that I know of

Now ... on the Elite 5 HDI units, those setting ARE available !!

Drake ... (copied this from 5 pages back)

    I use :

    (main menu)
    Color = Blue Gradient
    Surface Clarity = Off

    (under main menu "adjust" )
    Contrast = 60%

(under Settings menu, then Sonar menu)
    Manual Mode = On
    Noise Rejection = On

(under Settings, then System menu) Advanced Mode = On

Those are the only settings that I think would have any effect on the screen image, but if you want to know more settings, then just tell me which ones you're interested in knowing & I'll look & see.

Biggest difference I've seen between using 800kHz & 455kHz has been the crisper clarity of the images with the 800kHz setting. It just seems to define the smaller details of what I'm seeing on the screen.

This is what I'm getting with those settings :

    FALLEN TREE

BRUSH PILE ... (wavy image due to choppy water)

Showing clarity difference in 455 vs 800kHz setting

Images would probably have been clearer/sharper if I had been moving faster ... but, since I don't FISH going 2MPH or more, I don't take screenshots at that speed

Best images supposedly come at speeds of 1-8mph, according to the "instructions", so I'm quite satisfied of the quality of the images I'm seeing at speeds less than 1mph.

on Lowrance DSI how do you determine where the target is?
    Cone angle is :

    The cone angles for the 3 frequencies: 50kHz (35 degree),83kHz (40 - 44 degree), and 200KhZ (20 degree). Attached is a cone area calculation.
so in 30 ft of water the diameter of the cone is 30 X .631 or 18.93 ft.
The picture scrolls from the right. When a stump or fish enters the picture how do you know where it is relative to
    the transducer?
Yes the operations manual is basically useless as well as Lowrance videos.

    Cone Angle Area Calculator
    Cone Angle Depth(ft) Diameter(ft) Area(sq. ft)
    8 5 depth X .140 = 0.70 0.38
    12 35 depth X .210 = 7.35 42.43
    20 1000 depth X .353 = 353.00 97867.68
    35 62 depth X .631 = 39.12 1202.08
    60 180 depth X 1.155 = 207.90 33946.80

You really don't know exactly "where" in the fan shaped ping sweep of a DSI, your target is. But, then neither do you know exactly where that same target is when using a 2d broadband sounder's cone. It's the nature of the shape of the outgoing ping signal, and the 2d rendering of that image on the screen as it moves right to left.

This is the major reasoning factor for Side Imaging, StructureScan, 360* imaging, or SpotlightScan .... so you CAN tell where the target object is, in relation to the transducer or yourself.

And ... also consider that a Elite 5 DSI unit does NOT have 50kHz - 83kHz - 200kHz frequencies. It only has 455kHz & 800kHz frequencies ... and they do not emanate out in a "cone" shape, but are actually shaped more like a thin fan shaped beam. The sole purpose of those frequencies is to provide a picture like image of objects within the confines of the sonar beam, as opposed to the "cartoon like" blobs created by the cone shaped sonar beam of a 2d broadband sonar.

Personally, I don't miss the 2d capabilities of my former depthfinder units ... but, it would appear as though so many others did miss that capability, that Lowrance saw fit to discontinue the Elite 5 DSI unit and morph it into the HDI series. Or else they felt obligated to try & emulate the HB units that offered DI & 2d in the same unit ....

What amazes me, to that regard, is that I hear people saying that they better understand what it is they are seeing in the 2d image ... NOW that they have a Down Image picture to compare it to My amazement is simply in the fact that, if you can tell what the object is, from looking at the picture quality image of the DI capability of the unit ... then what do you need the 2d broadband sonar image for ??
