In another thread, a question was asked about what the "other" uniplug port, on the back of a E5DSI unit, was used for. It's marked as Temp/Speed. But, as we all know ... temp is built into the transducer, and GPS gives us our speed. Well, come to find out .....

I think I've found the answer to the question about the "extra" speed/temp plug-in port :

    Open this link ...
    http://www.lowrance.com/en-US/Produc...-Chartplotter/

Then go down to the Elite 5 unit & click on it. Look on the right hand side, under the picture of the unit, under "Documents" ... and click on the Mark/Elite Brochure link (third one down).

Look at the bottom page ... top right hand corner ... where the back of the unit is shown. It reads as follows :

New, quarter-turn uniplug connectors are compatible with previous Lowrance and Eagle® uniplug models for upgrade installation.

    Port #1 ... Power/sonar uniplug port.

Port #2 ... Uniplug port for sonar Temp 2/Speed
sensor, or NMEA 0183 for VHF
    DSC and autopilot options.

Are there any tricks on adjusting the e5 in order to get better clarity at slow speeds around 1 mph...I took my unit out for its maiden voyge this morning and the screen has alot of clutter down to about 5 feet and the structure seemed to be distorted unless i was running 3-4 mph.I was unable to get any screen shots i dont have a sd card yet

Well guys I just pulled the trigger on this unit. Thanks to everyone in the thread, as I just finished skimming through all the pages and taking notes.

On another note, Gander Mountain currently has this unit for $399.99 with a $50 rebate and free shipping.

Check your "Surface Clarity" setting. Sounds like it's set on "Low" ... next time try it on "Med" awhile, then "High" awhile & see which one gives you the picture you want.

You might also want to change the color palette, to see if images are clearer using a particular color scheme.

Also ... if you have it set on the default setting & running in auto ... you might want to put it in "Advanced" mode & manual settings, and play around with the menu. You can fine tune things, then.

The DSI screen should be on the 800 kHz setting for everything except "deep" water. It give a better rendering of the image. (455 kHz setting is for deep water)

If you haven't already done so .... go here & print this out : http://www.lowrance.com/Root/Lowranc...-10153-001.pdf It will help show you all the operations/menus, and what they contain & do.

Yes it was set on low and everything was on default settings I diddnt mess with advanced mode cause i was scared of messing something up..also what is considered deep water,Im gonna try it out again this weekend and see if I can get a clearer image, one more thing when I installed the unit on my boat i loosely bundled up the extra transducer wire can that cause interference? .If it keeps raining i wont have to go to the lake I'll be able to get screen shots of my front yard

I lowered a double drop shot rig below the transducer and the messed with the surface clarity, contrast, and color pallets until I could see the jig clearly. Once there, everything else was picture perfect. Very happy with the unit.

Wow, took me two evenings after work to read all 40 pages, but between everyone's input and Gander Mountains price I just had to order one. Thanks to all who posted.

I don't think you can "mess" anything up ... since you can always put it back into default mode, if you can't/don't figure out "advanced".

I consider "deep" water as anything over 20' deep ... as I rarely ever fish deeper than that. Your waters may be shallower, overall, than mine ... so "deep" to you may be only 15'

My extra transducer wire is also bundled .... no noticeable interference.

I do recommend getting a 2GB SD mini-card (for screen shots &/or updates) ... and I do recommend getting the update, as it will add the function of being able to split screen over/under to the default side by side split screen. The "over/under" split allows for a wider view of your DI screen !!

I looked for the 2GB card in several places, and was ready to pay ~$15 for the card & reader. I was pleasantly surprised when I found this one online @ $7 (shipped & insured). 2GB microSD Secure Digital TransFlash Card with Reader (BMZ-C)
There may be cheaper deals out there, but I'm happy with this one at this price.

I got one of these units about six months ago and love it. Took me a while to get the settings right where I could see structure and cover. I've marked new brush piles that I was not able to see before and marked my own made out of PVC. Alot of people said you cannot see PVC with sonar but I could see them pretty good with the dsi. Still learning new things on it everytime I go out and this thread has been real informative. Thanks.
