I did a little more research on charging your deep cycle batteries and according to what I found out was using a low amp to recharge will give you a deeper charge and will last longer on the lake. It will take longer to charge at the lower amp and if you need a quick charge the 10 amp or higher will work but the life of the charge is shortened. The articles I read also said the lower amp charge will extend the life of the battery and the higher amp charges will shorten the life of the battery. One article stressed the importance on charging the deep cycle battery soon after use to extend the life of the battery. Most everything you will need to know about what type battery to buy and how to care for the battery can be found on google.

I have an optima blue top battery that I have been using about every other weekend now for 3 years. I longline all year except when the crappie are schooled up around shallow cover. They are high dollar batteries for sure, but I run the daylights out of mine just about every trip and recharge it soon as I park the boat. I have yet to see any decrease in the time I spend trolling with it.
I also would like to add that I got both of mine for free. I don't think I would pay that much for a battery. I am Army and my unit had two of them from the deployment they where going to throw away. I snatched them up quick. I will update this post when my trolling battery finally starts to show some decrease in power on the water. Most trips I would say I troll around 6 or so hours. Depending on the weather and current and how fast I was moving around, I would have around 30-60% of battery power left over. 60% days are usually perfect conditions with wind/current helping me or usually 5 hour days. My wife's rules are off the water by noon if I go every other weekend. I am going to miss her when she starts working on Saturdays next month.

Someone once asked me: "Aren't you concerned with all the gaps in your work history due to fishing?"
My response: "I am more concerned about the gaps in my fishing history due to work!"
