Pictures would definitly help - I use a MinnKota foot control with a quick release mount. The mount only requires about 12 inches of flat space. Like this:
Minn Kota Quick-Release Bracket Mounts, Electric Trolling Motor Accessories, Electric Trolling Motors, Boating : Cabelas.com
I mounted it on the front of the boat where I have maybe a 18 inches to work with. Put at an angle that was pleanty of room.

I have a plain old 55# min kota tm its not one of the new flip up type thats why I am looking at an alternate way to mount it so it is more to the front of the boat and not hanging off the side of the boat. I guess I will have to weld something up out of channel and mount a plate so it can be swung to the side when loaded on the trailer

    Thanks,

you might do a web search for trolling motor mount. I saw a few for <$30 that would work.

But if you can weld, then go to town! You get exactly what you want and I'm certain it will be 10x as strong as anything you could get prefab.
