i have done the update and i like looking at the " little fishies" lol thanks for your input
I'd try and find a local who also has an 898 and get together with them on the water. That way you could swap head units and see if it's in the transducer, transducer location, or possibly an installation problem. He could see if he can duplicate your problem with your head unit on his boat, or mount his head unit on your boat and see if the problem still exists. I sent a head unit to a fellow to try that was having problems, and it turned out that the settings had to be fine tuned. Personally I would have returned the whole works to BassPro for a refund or exchange. Returning just the head left you with a 50-50 chance it would be fixed. I think I read there's a software update for problems at shallow depths. Also try and learn to use your unit without fish symbols, They might make you feel good seeing all the little fishies, but it really isn't the best way to run the unit.
PS. I wouldn't count on anybody's customer service reps to be proficient in the operation of all the companies products. I can't imagine anyone at H/B, Lowrance, Garmin, etc knowing the manuals for all the units inside and out. Should they, yes, but I think that's a pretty tall order. Most of us are lucky enough if we master our own units. That's why I suggest getting together with some one who has the same product.

UPDATE: customer service finally answered. we took a little ride on my boat down the canal with them on speakerphone ---after all was said and done---no results---wanted me to send in a screen snapshot---i said the screen looks the same as it has since mar 6th. why should i take more of my time for that ----IT IS WHAT IT IS!
going to cool down over the weekend and take it it back and get a lowrance and see what that holds in store---been trying not to do that ,as my husband is the one to suffer changing transducers

That's a shame you couldn't get straightened out. I've sent back H/B, Lowrance and Garmin units at different times. Some with big problems, and some with little problems. If you are buying another product, check out BOE marine. I buy all my electronics there. You will get someone much more knowledgeable than at BP, Cabelas etc. Stuff missing in the box when purchased, really sets off an alarm when I buy something.
good luck i hope you find a solution
fishing from the couch in front of the tv doesnt count
I was looking at getting a 898c SI as an upgrade sometime in future...............huh......will be doing alot of research on these.....

That's going to be a great combination Crappiegirl1.
I agree with shellback...stuff missing in the box is a BIG alarm..especially for from a big box store...
I still think it was a return and BPS just stuck it back on the shelf...
I sure wish HB had taken better care of your situation...
Looking forward to seeing pics from your new setup...
Keep us posted....
