kenny12... glad to have you aboard. Do you have a transom mount transducer? If so don't know if it is feasible to mount it this way. But it can be mounted on the trolling motor with the pointed end toward the front of motor. What I meant about moving was the trolling motor back and fourth like when you are fighting the wind.

Does anyone know if the there is an optional speed sensor for the 596c DI and if so can it measure speed down to the 1.5mp level we need for longlining crappies on the drift??

Sorry is this is considered a highjack of the thread.

As someone mentioned earlier, the down imaging uses a much wider scanning area cone than the traditional 2d sonar. That is why if you split the screen with di and 2d you will see more stuff on the di than 2d. Therefore, use down imaging (adjust setting to WIDE)to help scan the area and switch to 2d to pinpoint the fish/structure. Turn your fish id "ON." Go into your settings and make sure your 2d is frequency is set on 200/83. Adjust your settings so your fish ID shows different color fish on 83 and 200 (Humminbird exclusive feature). See where I am going with this? The 200 beam is a narrower beam, basically directly under the boat. The 83 is a wider beam, which will include stuff to the left and right of boat. The point to all of this is with the fish id ON and color set to show fish in different colors based on which frequency cone the fish are in, will help you determine if the fish are directly under the boat or out to the side.
    I hope this helps.

Sorry to bother you guys, but i just bought a 597ci hd di and was wondering for Crappie fishing would it be better to mount on transom or trolling motor.i'll give u some info to help.

    1) I have a 16ft alum lowe boat
2)i have a lowrance 320fishmark now mounted on the back. if i continue to use this would it be better on the front or back. Will it interfere with the humminbird?
    3) there was a humminbird guy there and he said that the images can be blurred from mounting on the trolling motor due to movement, from you experience can u manage this and keep it to a minimum?
4)if put on the back how would u place a marker buoy out if you went over soming u wanted to fish. i saw the demo with the way point marker then come back and use it to determine the exact location of the structure. would it be directly under the boat. will the same apply if its on the front.
5)is it better to locate the structure and stuff of interest on the 2d cone the mark and go back with the DI.
    6) Final one!! lol what are the best settings to start. i'm hoping this helps locate structure ive seen on the fishmark. i know im dealing with alot more unit here and any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Pete

I would turn off your fish Id and learn to fish without it. Those arches are larger predator fish under a school of baitfish. You can actually see one of them attacking bait.. Make me want to grab a jigging spoon and drop it down in there.....LOL . Incredible detail on those 500/700 units ! Humminbird did a fantastic job engineering these finders. Thanks for your great screen-shots !

    Kenny12,
Any chance that you got into less than 2 feet of water?
Try setting the Water Type menu to the Saltwater Deep setting and select a higher numerical Surface Clutter menu setting as well.
