I just installed a Elite-5 DSI on the bow of my boat and have a X-96 if I feel the need for 2D on the bow. Time will tell.

I've only had it on in the shop, the maps are very basic. I think this will be a very good unit for the money.

The 2011 500 and 700 series model DI units are a different type of DI Jaxsprat. They use a dedicated element within the transducer to provide the two DI beams (455/800kHz) and so should work up to the same speeds as 2D sonar will work. Actually they are 2D sonar but are very narrow front-to-rear and wide left-to-right where most traditional 2D sonar is circular shaped.

Why 2D sonar if you have DI sonar? Because of the shape of the sonar beam as stated above. Although the DI sonar can give a clearer view of what the boat has passed over, it can only do so from a narrow area while the 2D sonar can give readings from a larger area. Plus many are so used to traditional 2D sonar that they may prefer to use it versus DI sonar, especially when jigging as it will be easier to locate your bait in the wider coverage area of the 2D sonar.

I'm looking at the Lowrance for this reason, HB doesn't offer a trolling motor mounting option. I understand the smaller "picture" frame, but I would much rather have that coming off of the front of the boat.

Lowrance customer service scares me, but for what I want, that's the only option.

I have 2 HDS5's and an LSS-1 unit. I found out early on that the 2D wasn't needed for me for any reason. Nothing is going to give you a better picture then the DI. I almost wish I hadn't epoxied the 2d ducer in my hull. It's there if I need it.
The Free updates from Lowrance also are great. Enhancements and Tweaks to make the units run better are awesome, and always Free.

    Filletfetish,
There is a trolling motor mount option with the new XNT-9-DI-T transducer but it is in the form of our AD-XTM9 Trolling Motor Adapter bracket.

Does that mean it works sitting still ?? Some one said you had to have movement to let the DI work

I've been completely still and watched fish swimming through. If you're using side scan, then you need to be moving. DI will work just like 2d when sitting still.

I have the trolling motor bracket. Just waiting for the hb 570 di that I ordered from Cabela's the first of the month. They said they would be in on the 18 and then again on the 24. I guess I will get one of these days.
