TN, I've got a 788 on the bow and 998 at the console, love it, bigger is better. When you do split screen or even tri screen you'll appreciate the size.
I'm trying to decide between the 898 and 998. Looks like the 998 screen is about 33% larger as far as area (27.4 in^2 vs. 20.7 in^2 for the 898). Is it worth the price difference? Also, anyone have any experience with mounting the transducer on a pontoon boat? I'm thinking it would likely require two transducers, one on each side, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.
Thanks for any input.

Go as big as you can afford, I have a 797 now and I can hardly see the screen. The si is useless if you can't see it.
I agree with go as big as you can. There is a lot of info on the screens. I am a Lowrance diehard so I am not that up on the HB. What I wanted to add is on the Lowrance you have an overlay feature. Not sure if HB has this or not. If it does mounting the transducers that far apart would not be good. If I remember right the Lowrance recommends the transducers to be within one foot of each other for this feature.
I have the 898c and the screen fits my needs perfect. I could have bought the bigger one but i really didnt see the need. I fish out of a 1650 Lowe.
I have the 1197 and I wish HB made a 1397...
I didn't realize (before I actually saw a SI in action) that objects on the SI screen look considerably smaller than they do on the 2d or DI screen...
A brush pile image on the SI screen is (at least) 1/4 smaller than the same image on the 2d screen....for example...
I keep my SI side distance at 65 ft left and right.....so when viewing the 3-way split screen.....if a brush pile shows as the size of a golfball (actual size) on the DI and 2d screen...that same brushpile shows as the size of a dime on the SI screen.....
So imagine what a brushpile looks like on an 8" screen where the brushpile shows as the size of a quarter on the DI or the 2d screen..the image on the SI is going to be about the size of a soybean....
Go as big as you can afford or you will always wonder..."if I had just went ahead and paid the extra for the bigger screen"...
