    Default Fishfinder troubles... any ideas???

Just swapped my Humminbird over to a new boat. It was working perfectly before the move. Now... continuously goes from working fine, to working intermittently (screen shows graph for a moment, then nothing, then graph), to not working at all (nothing on the screen). My first though was a loose transducer wire, and that may be it, but the odd thing is that it seems to work better when my trolling motor is running????? The transducer wire is isolated. I ran it on the opposite side of the boat from all my other wiring, so I wouldn't expect it to be an electronic interference issue.

Any of you experienced similar troubles, or have an idea of where I should start?

    Thanks!

Just guessing here but if it works better when the troller is on then it may be something loose. Engaging the trolling motor could be applying pressure, vibrations, or some such that makes it work whereas it was not. I would still start with examining the connection. Is it possible that the wire was kinked and broken?

Since you're having intermitent to no screen at all. I say the unit itself, or wiring to the unit is the heart of the problem. If it were the transducer, the unit itself shouldn't be affected, other than no graph or depth readings. Double check all your wiring to the unit, especially grounds.

In addition to the good suggestions above, you can try testing your unit on another boat to help isolate the problem. Test their unit on your boat as well to see if the problem stays on your boat or with your unit.

Check that the transducer connector is getting fully inserted into the unit.
