Really big dime alright. Can you tell me the difference between the 998 and the 1197? Thanks.

Differences between the 997 and 998 include a faster processor like has been mentioned (but I don’t know what this means to the user), a video output and Ethernet ports. All other differences will be made up with a free software update for the 997 units after the first of the year.

If your local store has the 998c Si Combo unit listed for $999 than I would snap it up! These have not hit the store shelves yet but if you can pre-order one at that price I would go for it! These should list for about $2,000 as they replace the 997 units. What you may have seen is the 798 units which should run around $1,000 or less. Too many numbers that are too close together to keep straight in my old mind anyways!

You do not have to add anything to these units to get them to work. Some will add additional accessories for added functionality that they want and others may add additional transducers depending on their boat designs and whether they want top mount the Si transducer where it is more protected or not.

Upgrades are not mandatory but they are free. Sometimes an upgrade will add additional functions or capabilities to the units, sometimes they fix reported problems with the units, usually they do both.
According to what I understand from this post from Greg is that the new 998 will be an upgraded 997....the 998 processor is supposed to be bought up to the same speed as the 1197 processor....

Then, there is the addition of the video-out and ethernet ports on the back of the unit as mentioned in Greg's post above....(just like on the 1197)

Taking those upgrades into account (old 997 vs new 998)...the only difference I can tell in the 998 and the 1197 is the screen size.....

IMHO...buy the largest screen you can afford........

Im a 997 owner. All i can tell you is how I feel. Absolutley do not own one until the refresh rate is fixed. It is a large pain in the butt in its original state. The sideimaging is great. Its just a double edged sword. I love my unit...yet I have been so dissapointed that the unit was released to the pubic with such a clunker GPS. So its great on side and not so great on the other. Thats my honest assesment based on my own dealings with the unit. I'm gonna try the updates when they come out to see if anything changes. I hope it helps. If is does it will be a completely great unit.

I agree with CarpPoop on this fact......

The GPS refresh rate is supposed to be fixed in the 4.700 version software....

A unit with 4.700 version software preinstalled can be purchased...

Talk to the customer service representative at your retailer of choice and make sure you are getting a 2010 model with the 4.700 version software....

This can be verified by the serial number on the unit....

You fellers are coming around. Concentrated on the technical aspect first. Price is secondary if you buy a POS.

I agree100% with CarpPoop.-that said I won't be buying another HB til I see with my own eyes if that 4.700 version really works..as many folks as there was were upset with it(SLOW GPS) I have only seen/heard a few claiming it now is better(does that man it really works) on their 1197 with new version. fool me once YES but not TWICE-At this point its HB's game to WIN or Lose [/B]

Although I'm confident the HB new refresh rate (4Xsec) is supposed to be better than the old refresh rate (1Xsec)...I hope HB doesn't stop there...

I think Lowrance's refresh rate is already 5Xsec........so..... I know the technology is out there.....
