Default One can use tungsten or bismuth-EPA lead ban

I think either of these are fine as well as some other lead substitutes. If you have ever
seen a goose, duck, or swan die from lead poisoning, it is very tragic. The main problem
with lead is that it is toxic.

The price for our jigs and flies will increase a great deal and most of us know from waterfowl hunting, steel is not an appropriate substitute for lead.

I have duck & goose hunted all my life. I have never, nor do I know anyone who has ever seen a duck, goose or swan die of lead poisoning. Please explain to me how a duck, goose or swan ingests these toxic lead jigs. Ducks, geese & swans are grazers.

The lead shot band was instituted to save the Eagle, They are nolonger on the endangered list.

    Inlighten me please.

    I ain't buy'n it!

Tungsten has a melting point of over 5400°F so only well equipped foundries will be able to deal with it.

I, too, would appreciate some enlightenment. I see that this was your first post on crappie.com, so I assume this topic must be important to you. I've only been fishing for about 35 years and haven't seen any of the aforementioned birds dead on or at the water. I have seen dead ducks that have been shot, so maybe that constitutes lead poisoning? You must have had the opportunity to be present at a necropsy at which lead poisoning was determined to be the cause of death, otherwise, how could you know by looks of a dead bird?

    I'm looking forward to further enlightenment . . . . . .

If we try to make jigs with a material heated that hot it will melt the hooks when it is poored in the mold. You are right. Everything would have to change.

i work in a sheet metal shop that has a founder in it and our founder dont even pour tungsten i think the hottest thing they pour is aluminium
and the equipment to pour tungsten would be super expensive and just not worth messing with cause your have to have a vent hood to suck up heat an fumes and then there is your heat resistance suit ya i said resistance not heat proof then your material and,ect i know lead is toxic but there is not other substiute for lead tackle with out fishing becoming a sport for the rich and famous pull your head out people lead is the fastest decomposing /one of the most abundate element on earth and dont matter how you go about it there is stuff out there that you just have to take a little more caution with so just be smart with lead and you will have no problems
    thanks Crappie Josh aka C.J.

There has been NO studies done by the federal Government/EPA or any of their branches to show fishing lead does any harm to birds, they don't have any proven case studies. This is all based on peta and some birding groups that just want to ban lead-with no proven reason why, just they want to..........In my mind its just-another ploy of PETA trying get their stupid way........... I think what may be the biggest shame of it all is that they- PETA may end up getting their way -why? not cause lead causes any major problem----it will be the "age old story" just can not get fisherman to get together and stand up for their rights, we need something like NRA to represent us.........................

I just wonder if first poster would be HONEST enough to tell us if they belong to PETA--probably not
Note if it isn't lead it will be hooks, and next fishing line, plastic worms, etc. PETA too much $$$$ and too many twisted lawyers

This is nothing more than the environmental groups (peta for one) that is trying to stop fishing. They cant come outright and stop fishing but they sure can stop some of the things we use and try to make fishing too expensive for most. The plastics we use will be the next on the hit list including fishing line.

Anybody here ever buy the shot shells needed to hunt waterfowl that is not lead, Some of the metals used cause the price of shot shells in 5 shot box to cost as much as 40 bucks to duck hunt. I quit duck hunting cause of the cost of not using lead,,and now mostly use black powder shotguns to game hunt with,,of which none can use steel shot..if I were forced to use an different shot than lead,,and then the costs are extremely high to buy the shot by the bag,,some of which are approaching 150 bucks per 6 pound bag,,as a substitute for lead..Imagine what this will do to the fishing industry..some of us will not be able to afford fishing as we can now.
