I think it was like 92%, I'll look again when I return to my Dr.s office. Even if it's off 10%
thats still a whole lot of oil, and we're still paying for it.

We spent a trillion dollars in the this coutry a year on research...if it were focused on profecting this energy source...then ya..just imagine.

We could spend the entire GNP on solar research, but that wouldn't change the physics. There is a finite quantity of solar energy that strikes each square foot of Earth's surface. Although there's room for substantial improvement in the efficiency of solar panels, to harvest enough solar power to make a meaningful contribution to the world's energy demand, you will have to intercept a massive number of square miles of sunshine. Cost becomes an immediate obstacle, and NIMBY isn't far behind. Should we continue our research? Absolutely--just don't expect solar energy to ever supply more than a tiny percentage of our current consumption.

Hydrogen is being promoted like snake oil. Yes, it burns 100% clean, BUT to produce meaningful quantities of hydrogen, you must use electricity. Where's that coming from? It can only come from the grid. Sure, hydrogen producers could buy small countries here and there and cover them with solar and wind farms--but that's not going to happen for all the same reasons that have kept these sources from replacing fossil fuels today. Meanwhile, the electricity needed for the hydrolysis of water into hydrogen will come from yesterday's power plants running on coal, oil, natural gas, and fissionable material.

    corker,
I am going to let you think you won this debate..because I'd rather be crappie fishing. Bottom line is...20 years ago, you couldn't power a battery from solar energy. The science has led to more and more breakthroughs. The same will happen for everything else. It may not happen in the short term, but it will happen..it must. Otherwise we will be back to living on the land and electicity will be a thing of the past.

Why shouldn't lead be banned. Banning would have a dramatic affect on one of the largest industries in America. Ill let someone else find hte numbers. Fishing tackle is a huge industry. Every jig manufacture would have to find a suitable alternative, retool, repackage, find new suppliers, work out new contracts, set up new inventories, dispose of current inventory, etc. This isnt as simple as changing from one metal to another.
