    Default Bigger aint always better

Our lake finally thawed and i found a few fish on the flats in 3' or less water i was using my favorite 2" stinger and was catching a fish here and a fish there and i knew there were more fish on each of the beds so i tried out my new tiny grubs and let me tell you they blew up on that little feller i had been jigpole fishin down in a stakebed i could see down in so i know i was fishin it right and only caught one fish but as soon as i put a 1/24oz jighead and the tiny grub on and pitched it over the top of the bed i started killin em i had a fish on the first 6 pitches and my buddy and i caught over one limit on that one bed....we fished a few more and it was the same story so moral of the story this ole dog learned a new trick.

Bug....that's a way of life up here. When we see major cold fronts or water temperatures that are under 40 degrees, small is the tendency for the baits most people use. You'll notice I said most people. While most of my baits are in the 1 1/2" - 2" range, I have a few molds that make baits down to an inch. Once open water hits I seldom fish much smaller than 1 1/2" baits but those cold fronts at this time of year in conjunction with water still in the 30's can force a guy to down-size much smaller. I've found that instead of going smaller, changing the profile and action of the bait works better....instead of beating my head against a wall using a 1 1/2" or 2" paddletail I'll switch to a 1 3/4" Twitchy Minnow and slow down my presentation. With our colder water right after ice out crappies are in a serious suspended mode and serious anglers use floats to target specific water depths. By the time we see spawning temperature water just about anything flies for baits and presentation. Your mentioning fishing beds has given me the shakes. Man I want to wet a line.

Depending on the mood of the fish, here in Alabama I have caught 16" and 17" Crappies on 1/32nd jigs, 1/16th jigs and 1/8th jigs all under slip floats Bob. A lot of my choices depend on how calm or active the water is. The bait size I use 98% of the time is two inches but I do have the 1.5" lures always handy. Congratulations on getting a new boat. I loved the Tracker I used to have. Never had problems with it.
