I built one out of PVC and have put in hundreds of stakes with it. It works great. I do need to build me one for the deeper water, and that would be a good one to build.

We have one made of PVC. The main part is 3in. and the handle is 1 1/4in.
The handle is in 5 ft. sections. Put a male adapter on one end and a female adapter on the other. That way you can screw them together and drive stakes as deep as needed. Works even 20ft. deep.

Hey Krappiekrazy, did you put anyting in the 3" pvc to make it heavier for easier drivin? I didnt build mine the same way you did, I cant drive any in real deep water. It is made for water about 8' and shallower. And I put concrete in it for the stake to have something hard to push it down easy. I'm going to build one like you are talkin about for deeper water, but I think I will put some concrete in the 3" piece like I did mine for easier driving. Or I might build one like in the diagram out of metal pipe.

I used a block of oak wood cut to fit into the 3in. PVC.
    List of materials.......Driver only

    3in. PVC 32in. long
    3in. PVC coupling
3in. block of wood (put inside pipe against bushing)
    3in. x 1 1/4in. PVC bushing
    1 1/4in. PVC female adapter

    Handle material........

    1 1/4in. male adapter
    1 1/4in. x 5ft. pipe
    1 1/4in. female adapter

Make as many handle sections as needed for the depth you like. We have used it down to 20ft. Some people dill holes in the 3in. to let the trapped air out. I don`t!!! I let the trapped air push the driver back to the surface. Guess I`m lazy.

what keeps the stake from falling out of the driver while your lowering it to the bottom? or does the desire of the stake to float up hold it in place. i much rather do this easier to hide in boat and easier to fish , i have plenty of boo growing in back yard so i could make stakes from boo as well

Willsjwills made me one like this out od Aluminum. I do everything from driving stakes to staking down brush piles with it.

Tie a top to it, drive the stake 3-4 ft in the ground, and you have a brush top, and NO CONCRETE!!!!

    Works like a charm!

Hey jhef, the wood or bamboo will be boyant in the pipe and it will not fall out when you put it in the water and start pushing it down.

Hey Krappiekrazy I made one like you advised and I think it will work great. I used the 5 foot sections to make them to screw together. The only thing is I have not been able to get out with the weather we have been having. But as soon as it gets nice out I will be out drivin some stakes.
