Default Trying to find a spot

I own land on a private oxbow lake and it shallow. The water ranges from 10' to 12' throught the hole lake. The lake is about two miles long and it's about 300 yards wide. The river don't flood it hardly anymore. And the fishing has been really slow. People have started skiing in the lake and I think that has help slow down the fishing also. I put out two pvc condos and christmas trees in the lake today. I plan on making some bambo condos but I really dont know where to put them. I caught some fish around a tree top that feel in this year. So I backed off the top towards the middle and put out them condos today. Does that sound like a good place or where?

I am new to sinking brush too and have not had the opportunity to do any thing at all as much as I intended to this year, so , I ain't no expert about sinking brush. But, I do know a few things about Oxbows. If you know where a ditch or creek drains into it, that will be a spring time spot. I would develop brush in water 6' or deeper. You may find a difference in the bottom where the old channel used to run. The difference might be less than a foot deep, but it is still a channel. I would drop some mats every 100 yards or so to drift over in the dead of winter or summer. I don't think you will have any water much deeper than 10' in the whole lake so I don't know if condos would be a good idea; unless you wanted them to stick up out of the water to stink it up for them skiers Look at the article that Jerry Blake wrote about building condos and mats. I think the mats would make a big difference in an oxbow with no cover.

    Default Brushpiles

Don't worry too much about the skiers. They bother us, but they don't bother the fish. I totally agree with drpepper, look for little bitty dropoffs, 1' is fine. Put your brush there. Also, brushpiles on big empyt flats will attract fish.

I think backing off that blowdown you found for another brushpile is a good idea.

Putting brush out is a lot of work, but a lot of fun.

    Good luck

    Default PVC or Brush

Don't forget to let us know when you catch fish on the pvc. I'm always debating myself on whether to use brush or pvc. I like permanent pvc but I just don't think it draws fish as fast.

    Default P Lake

I will be going over to the camp the first of the week. And on over to Mississippi later in the week to fish a few days. As you know I fish St. Joe a lot I think I can help you out some but to many? for you but here is a few things I would do.

Any water that is near the end of tree limbs that is in 6' of water put something there even if its only 2' tall it will help. If 8' D make it 4' tall. Look for pecan trees that over hang into water that is 5' deep are deeper that is another good place there will be limbs falling from the tree so make it a little sweeter for the fish. Look for any cypress knees in water or that will be in the spring, Back off and put something near there too.

Hope that this will help some.

    Let's go fishing.
