Don't know about sinking without weight.
Hedgeapple is/was used for fence post, some are still in fence rows after 200 years. It's very dense, resist rot and insects.
Several years ago someone posted a type of wood say (hedgeapple or gum) that would sink with out having to weight it down. Can anyone remember what it is?

Osage Orange (HedgeApple) is a VERY GOOD wood to use as cover....it will last a lifetime or more....BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO ANCHOR IT!
Here's a small bit of info....for more, go to Maclura pomifera - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The heavy, close-grained yellow-orange wood is very dense and is prized for tool handles, treenails, fence posts, and other applications requiring a strong dimensionally stable wood that withstands rot.[23] Although its wood is commonly knotty and twisted, straight-grained Osage orange timber makes very good bows. In Arkansas, in the early 19th century, a good Osage bow was worth a horse and a blanket.[8]
When dried, the wood has the highest BTU content of any commonly available North American wood, and burns long and hot.[25][26][27] The wood should not be used in open fireplaces without a spark screen because the wood is very prone to popping and may send sparks and small embers several feet."
"Unlike many woods, Osage orange wood is very durable in contact with the ground. Smaller logs make good fence posts, being both strong and durable. They are generally set up green because the dried wood is too hard to reliably accept the staples used to attach the fencing to the posts. Palmer and Fowler's Fieldbook of Natural History 2nd edition, rates Osage orange wood as being 2.5 times as hard as white oak (Quercus alba) and having twice the tensile strength."
But, Osage is not the heaviest or densest wood....look up IRONWOOD and it will give a list of the various trees and shrubs that fall under this category.
You still should be safe and anchor anything you put into a Public body of water...if this is for your personal Pond, then drop away!

To give you an idea of it`s durability, we started our "project" in 2008. the previous year while was scouting and recruiting a gentleman whom had seen on the lake asked me if could keep a secret. told him yes and he told me to meet him at the old main boat ramp, and said NOT to bring any poles OR GPS device which agreed to. we went on the W side of CJ and he showed me 3 large "BB"s (brush blocks) that due to where he dropped them about 15 years previously were cunningly hard to see; several he had to make a couple of passes on to locate. it was EASIER to see the fish hanging on them just above the thermocline ! point is he said they were already 15 years old then. he said he expected that 1/2 of their mass to STILL be there in the next ten years. 25+ YEARS is worth it in my personal opinion. ! the BAD side is that Osage is TOUGH to cut so have a SHARP chain saw chain ! we deliberately placed it in "high value" locations...
Persimmon , Sycamore , and a few others sink easily but like it was stated anchor them as currents or winds can still move them . I like these because they also have fewer limbs and easy to fish . Big fish perfer something they can swim through verses bushy tight cover .

Went to the Nimrod School of placing cover. We like five gallon buckets filled with rock's."lots of them in the road ditches Like with the handle still attached.Cut some local buckbrush limb's put in bucket fill with rock's "at boat ramp"."With the handle up if possible'."never had a problem getting hung on the handle"Take one too local honey hole drop at desired depth.Take one every time you go out'Will be surprised how many and how fast they add up and most other fishermen don't even notice the bucket think its minnow's or fishing tackle."LOL"We have put out 100's of these.Really,Really makes a difference in your fishing you know exactly where you are dropping your bait..Really works well for kid's or folks who cannot cast or have not fished very much. Our 2 cent's
