    Default Pond fountain filter question

For years, I have had a homemade floating fountain in my ½-acre pond to reduce the algae that blooms in the heat of the summer. I made it of a sump pump and a raft of PVC pipe. The first pump succumbed to a gasket coming loose and sticking in the impeller and the second pump (from Harbor Freight) has been working OK. Here is my problem, my proposed solution and my question. The pump will occasionally pick up some debris, which will clog the spray nozzle requiring I pull the pump to shore, clean it out and re-launch it. I think I would like to build a sump at the edge of the pond, install the pump in it and run the output pipe out into the pond to a much smaller raft where the spray nozzle will be. I thought I could cut a plastic 55-gallon barrel in half, cut or drill intake holes around the base, install the pump in the barrel and then plumb the output to the spray nozzle. Here is my question: I need to add some sort of filter to the barrel to at least decrease the flotsam that will get in and clog the nozzle. My first attempt was a Cut-To-Fit filter made for air conditioners and while it worked, it disintegrated in short order because (I assume) it was not made to be immersed in water. I have looked at commercial pond filters and they are too small and way out of my budget.

Can anyone suggest a material I can use to filter the big chunks from getting to the pump?

I really can't tell what size/how much you need...Ebay has cheap Pond filter foam, or find some open cell (I think you need Chemical rated??)
Some guys a long time ago just used window screen, you can start with regular screen and go down to "no-see-um" screen!

I had not thought of EBay. I checked and there are some possibilities there. I also thought of getting some industrial sized Scotch Brite pads to use. As far as size I haven't figured out how big the intake holes should be which will give me the height but I plan to drill the holes around half of the barrel's circumference, so will need about 36" in length. I am going to use some chicken wire on the inside to keep the filter media in place and maybe some river rock to keep it against the foam. See the rough sketch below.

If you buy at eBay, make sure you buy from a seller rated "Best Seller". You can be assured if something goes wrong, it will be made right. I have a "Best Seller" rating on eBay myself and I know the requirements and standards eBay forces on us to achieve and maintain that status. Good luck with your project. Paul

    Hey Clint
I can tell you from experience that Scotch Brite pads fall apart also in water!

Clint, I don't know what they call it, but there is a material made of plastic for lack of a better term. It is used as a large practical filter and looks like a Brillo pad. I found some one time in a aquraium/ pet store. And might find it at Lowes or Home Depot in a sheet. Seen it in black and in blue. It would not restrict the flow of water into your sump. I have a overflow on pond made of large PVC with 1 in holes drilled around it. I got a piece of stainless bug screen off a big truck radiator and wrapped around it to keep debris from plugging holes.

I wish I knew what you were referring to. I worked at Lowe's HIW until I retired and the only thing that comes close to your description is the cut-to-fit furnace filter material they sell. That was my first attempt and it did not last very long before disintegrating. It is made to be in air and broke down quickly when immersed.

I made a filter housing for other use, with water. I made aluminum frames bolted in the plastic tote and hardware cloth for dividers to hold the filter material in place.
I found these pads at Dirt Cheap for 0.75 each, they still had the center in them. I cut them to fit the frame.

I cut 2 pads for the water to flow through first. A few inches of poly pillow stuffing and another pad so the poly doesn't get into the pump.
